Upgraded to Firefox 27.0. IPA symbols are no longer rendered, e.g. at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaelic_type#Gaelic_script_in_Unicode the symbols all default to the error symbol. They reappear if I start Firefox in the safe mode. I made a clean install, e.g. right now there are no add-ons.

Your right, I had considered that, the hardware acceleration appears to be set on by default in FF. So it may be a compatibility issue between your video drivers and the new edition of FF, if that's the case then updating your video drivers could potentially resolve the issue more thoroughly. Beyond that is an issue for the developers.

Thanks--that fixed the immediate problem.

However, obviously I was using hardware acceleration with Firefox 26, e.g. the site was working OK yesterday with all my add-ons installed. Firefox 27 installed over the previous installation and the site quit working. The reason I had a clean install was that I uninstalled Firefox 27, deleted all Mozilla and Firefox directories, and used Ccleaner to clear all of the now bogus registry entries before reinstalling Firefox 27. I've never noticed the hardware acceleration setting before but it must have been present in Firefox 26 as the article was not new. So something still broke with the new version's handling of hardware acceleration unless the previous version's default acceleration setting was off instead of on.
