Hello,

I am using Thunderbird 115.0.1 (64 bit) on a device with macOS 13.4.1. (EDIT: The issue also persists with version 115.1.0.)

I have disabled the spaces toolbar. When I close the Thunderbird window, but let the app run in the background, the spaces toolbar reappears when I re-open the window. Not every time, but at least twice a day. I can't seem to recognize a pattern when that happens.

The bug has existed since the release of Thunderbird 115.

FWIW I'm not able reproduce this with 117 beta on Mac, nor with 115.1.0 on Windows.

What layout are you using according to View > Layout ?

It could be a corrupted session or layout file. Try this: Help/Troubleshooting, Profile Folder, Show in Finder, close TB, delete or rename session.json and xulstore.json, restart TB and see if the toolbar setting is retained.

It's the vertical view, with card view enabled.

I have tried this, closed and re-opened the window a couple of times, and unfortunately, the spaces toolbar eventually reappeared.

It could be related to your layout settings. Have you checked the layout under View > Layout? If it's the vertical view with card view enabled, that might be causing it. Also, it's worth a shot to troubleshoot this by going to Help > Troubleshooting, then selecting Profile Folder and Show in Finder. Once there, close Thunderbird and delete or rename both session.json and xulstore.json. After doing this, restart Thunderbird and see if the toolbar setting sticks.

Anyway, is the combination of vertical view with card view really problematic? Why would that be?

In the meantime, I've installed Thunderbird from scratch. And what can I say, the bug still persists with Thunderbird 115.5.2 and macOS 14.2.

Just a fly by comment: Does you profile have numbered copies of those files you were asked to delete?

I can only think of a couple of scenarios where this default value would reoccur after it had been reset, outside of a bug.

One involves the files being inaccessible for some reason (antivirus springs to mind) one indication of that is in files being duplicated in numbered versions in the file system.

The second is the inadvertent hitting of a shortcut key. However I am not aware of an assigned shortcut for the show spaces toolbar so don't give much credence to this as an option.

I just double-checked, that's not the case. I made sure to create a completely new profile with the profile manager.

I am not using that. I almost wish I were now, it would have offered an easy solution. :-D

I am not aware of that either. I exclusively open the app with the mouse. And Thunderbird needs to be running in the background for some time in order for the bug to occur. It can't be reproduced by merely restarting the device.
