can't seem to install on Nokia N900
I go to firefox/m on the N900, I push the download button. It switches to the App Manager and says downloading, then within maybe a few seconds, preparing to install. That trundles for a short while, it ends, and I'm back in the regular App Manager window with "Uninstall" "download" and "update." No other info. And I can't find the presumably installed firefox anywhere. There's no icon on the main screen with all the other icons. I even tried opening a terminal and typing "firefox". (No such program, it said.) I've tried this three times, and as far as I can tell, it's just not installing. What am I doing wrong?

Just double-checking: Do you mean the home screen/desktop, or the "all apps" view that you get when you click the "grid" icon in the top left corner of the task switcher?
Does Firefox appear in the list of programs to uninstall in the application manager?

If mobile Firefox is installed, then typing "fennec" should work. (It's the code name for the mobile Firefox project.)
Have you previously installed any version of Firefox/Fennec on your N900?

Yes, exactly. I just got the N900 (yesterday!) so what I don't know about how to use it could fill books.
I just tried checking whether it's in the uninstaller -- no -- and whether typing the command fennec works -- also not. It says "fennec: not found". So it seems that it really isn't installed.
No, I hadn't installed a Firefox or Fennec before. This was my first attempt. (Well, my first three attempts. I hope I didn't mess anything up with all the retries.)
I haven't tried the alternate method of sending the download link to my phone number, and I'd rather not since I figure that means I'll be paying T-mobile some ungodly amount for data rates. I'm using the N900 over my wifi, and I could also hook it up to my computer with the data cable. I run ubuntu 10.04.
(Sheesh. I mean the all apps view after clicking on the grid icon.)
I realized I could check the application log. (As I say, I have a lot to learn about the N900!) And I think I know why it won't install:
"W: GPG error: http://moff.mozilla.com chinook Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 667387BFFF445C24"
What I don't know is how to add a pubkey on maemo. I'll go look, but if anyone here knows offhand, please let me know! :D
I assume the usual "sudo apt-key" etc that I use on ubuntu won't work. I did download rootsh from maemo-extras, so I have root access on the phone.
Well, it says on the Maemo site that's just a warning (same as ubuntu situation) and shouldn't prevent install. It's the only relevant error message I see though. (I think.) They also say how to add the key. I have the pubkey part, obviously, but where-oh-where is the pgp part I also need?? At least to make the warning go away, if this isn't what's hanging up the install.
The first priority is still to get good old fennec installed!
Okay, this is as dumb as it gets. My excuse is I'm just starting with the n900. Turns out that at this point:

I should have selected "Download". I found that out by more or less randomly tapping at the screen in frustration.
Erm, Fennec UI designers? It is not intuitively obvious that "preparing to install" followed by standard App Manager icons means "push the download button." Flashing up a message saying that's the next step at that point would be a LOT more helpful.
Now that I have Fennec running, it's definitely better than the maemo browser. They need to just make Fennec the default and save us all the trouble!
