Problems deleting multiple emails

When I hold down the shift key to highlight multiple emails it opens all the emails in separate tabs. If I manage to highlight all the emails and press delete on the keyboard it can also do the same thing. If I then close all the tabs, in either situation, (using right click, close other tabs) Thunderbird minimizes to the bottom of the screen.
