Unexpected loss of connectivity, shutdowns

My Flame is running 2.0.0.0-prerelease, the official OTA version. I use it with only one SIM card in the primary slot (3G).

The problem is unreliable connectivity: 1. Sometimes connection to the SIM is lost, and then I have to reenter the PIN. 2. Sometimes the phone turns off in my pocket. 3. When I turn it back on, then time is off.

Are these problems most likely in hardware or in software? If software related, what can I do?

A hardware issue could be expensive because the phone was delivered from China. In addition to S&H there was a 34 EUR fee on import.

Concerning time: I don't let it be set automatically because then the timezone is wrong, but that's another problem.

Can you downgrade your software at all. If it worked before then it might help by doing this.

No idea if it worked before. After receiving the device, right away I applied all recommended OTA updates.

It would be great if someone with a Flame and the latest updates could comment. At the moment the device is not really useful for me. Add to that the - unrelated - fact that OpenWapp broke some days ago, possibly because WhatsApp changed their API.

I've got a Flame with the latest regular update (2.0 prerelease) and also only one SIM card installed. So far, I've not seen the problems you describe. Connectivity seems to be pretty reliable on my phone so far.

Did you check, if there is any play in the SIM card or battery slot that might cause this?

What I noticed, when I first put the phone together is that I had a bit of trouble getting the back cover to really lock everywhere. When I pressed one corner, the cover came somewhat loose again in another place. So this is a (not very likely) possibility you might want to check.

Thanks for your observations, @WerWer! It's good to hear that the phone can work reliably. Maybe mine is faulty, or the SIM card. However, the card has worked reliably in other phones.

Concerning the back cover: Indeed it takes a little work to snap it on in all places, but it does sit firmly on my device.

Does the problem also happen, if you just let the phone sit on a table, i.e. when it is not in your pocket? I know, this is not a practical way to use a phone, but it may help to identify a mechanical problem vs. a problem with electronics and/or software.

@WerWer It happens primarily with the phone in my pocket. In the past days I didn't move much (caught a cold), and so far there have been no unexpected losses of connectivity.

Due to the WhatsApp problem, I may get another phone, with a Micro SD card slot, and so I may have to cut down the card and use it with an adapter in the Flame. That could definitely cause mechanical problems. However, so far I'm using a Mini SIM, which fits snugly.

Hi feklee,

Be careful with the adapter - I've broken pins in the SIM connector on a Geeksphone Peak before. I'm not sure if this could happen to other phones as well, but I would recommend being very careful. =)

I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Flame device. Please reply to this message with the following information:

  • What is the OS version and Build ID found in the Device Information page? Please visit this link if you need help finding the Build ID of your phone.

There is a bug open about the issue with the time being off:

I suspect that the other issues you mention may also be software related. I would suggest flashing your device to either Base Image v188 or v180.

I personally encountered some issues with T2M's v188 build, so you may find v180 to be more stable:

I hope you find this information useful. Please let us know if you have any other questions or issues with your Firefox OS device.

Thanks,

Thanks Ralph, for the detailed response!

Build Identifier is: 20141016183911

That's the latest "stable" OTA update, 2.0.0.0-prerelease: Checking for new updates doesn't show anything newer.

It could be a hardware issue, of course.

Anyhow, showstopper at the moment is lack of a functioning WhatsApp compatible app. Developers are working on this, I know, but in the meantime I'm cut off from communication.

So after my report above, I ran into a similar problem with the phone switching itself off without apparent cause. After some research and observation I got the impression that it was related to the battery in some way, because the phone would not charge completely or show 100% full and then only 40% the next minute.

So finally, I did a reset of the device (via the device information settings option) and reconfigured the phone and reinstalled my apps.

After this I've not had any shutting off for the past two days, where before it happened several times a day. So far it looks good. Unless you've found a different solution, you may want to try this (even though it is a pain to loose all the customizations).
