When Firefox presents the Open/Save/Cancel dialog, does it indicate what kind of file it thinks it is?

Once you have that information, you may be able to change Firefox's behavior here:

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Applications

You can use the search box to filter the list or scroll down to the type of document Firefox is detecting. There you can change from "Always ask" to a particular application.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work if the server sends a very generic content type.

Firefox does indicate what type of file it is, and I have the open with option checked, and the "Do this automatically for the files like this from now on.

Under the options> applications> the file shows the correct applications.

I have everything checked so that it should just trust the file and open without asking for an additional click from the user.

We are going to use this as an interface for our server....I wish there was a way to setup the browser to trust everthing when it is accessing the local server.

Unfortunately there are bigger issues, when trying to open Algor FEA files, it doesn't load them correctly. I have checked IE9 and found that it does load them, so unless I can actually talk to someone from Firefox about this issue we will have to use IE9......

I'm not personally familiar with these apps and file types. You probably would find it easiest to make IE your default browser so it will handle external links, and then use Firefox for regular browsing.

If you're interested in further debugging, it would be helpful to get information on the content-type sent by the server (I assume it's a web server not a file server). If this is not displayed in the Open/Save/Cancel dialog, it might be possible to check it using an add-on.
