Is there anyway to import bookmarks and settings from Firefox 3.6.* into Firefox 4 (Beta) ? I use Firefox 3.6.* but have also installed Firefox 4 separately and would like to have my bookmarks. The 'Import' option only shows importing from IE :(

For the new FF4 when Firefox is open press the ALT key on your keyboard. It will open a menu at the top of Firefox. You will recognize this bookmark menu as it works like the older versions of Firefox and has the Organize Bookmarks option. From there use the Import/Export option and go from there!

Hope this helps. =] sorry for bad grammar.

I've never imported or exported passwords as I do not save mine on any browser. You can possably try this Add-ons that you can find here: Password Exporter 1.2

There is some stuff you could read on that site. Hope this helps you Anil. If not then I'm sorry.

Sorry about that I forgot to put my info when posting the above post. However like I stated I never let my browsers save passwords. I used to a long time ago but never had the need to export them etc.

I would mostly save the information somewhere else. Such as, a notebook, or text document. and save on a separate drive in a zipped or rared folder.

Anyways I hope that the password exporter 1.2 works.

In Firefox 3.6.x on WinXP:

Click on "Bookmarks" ==> "Organize Bookmarks"

In the resulting dialog box click on: "Import and Backup"

Next, Click on "Export HTML"

You will be asked to provide a filename. You will need to remember the filename and location where you saved the file.

In Firefox 4.x on WinXP

Click on "Bookmarks" ==> "Show all Bookmarks"

In the resulting dialog box click on: "Import and Backup"

Next, Click on "Import HTML"

In the resulting dialog box select the "From an HTML File" Radio Button

Now, navigate to the file that you saved previously, select that file and click on "Open".

A few seconds later all of your bookmarks will appear.

I have only used and tested this on Windows XP, Service Pak 3. However, since the menus in Firefox are pretty much the same across all platforms, everything should work the same except for the file location dialogs. I hope this helps, and as usual, YMMV.

GRIPE: Why did Mozilla see fit to "Hide" the "Organize Bookmarks" behind the "Show All Bookmarks" menu? This is counter-intuitive and very confusing to persons who are not "Power Users"

I use KeePass for password management, so cannot help with import/export of passwords.

Pressing ALT merely selects the File menu - nothing new or useful happens. Organise Bookmarks remains out of reach.

Ok, Win Xp sp3.

  • Bookmarks backed up as both Json file and HTML, using FFox 3.6.1.6
  • Followed instructions above per Bobber269.
  • Located new HTML file
  • Started 4.0 and let fly.

Machine acted like it was going through the motions, but Bookmarks never restored. Closed, and restarted FFox 4.0, tried again. same result.

Found another way: I used the .json backup file.

I went to:

C:\Documents and Settings\[your login]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\uhjnzjlv.default\bookmarkbackups

and renamed the latest file in there using some very early date.

Moved the .json file I created using backup, into this folder, and renamed it to the name used by the previous file.

Then I used the "Restore from previous" option, and voila! Bookmarks restored!

No, this isn't a simple solution, but it works.

Fred

Note: This should be easier than it is, guys. ;^)

Click on the firefox icon on the top left, then click on bookmarks. Just hoovering brings up a simplified view of the bookmarks and thats not what you want.

After clicking, you'll bring up the tried and trusted bookmarks window with the import/export option at the top.

Enjoy !

SOLUTION FOR IMPORTING XML BOOKMARKS FROM FIREFOX 3.6 INTO FIREFOX 4.

1. Export existing bookmark from Firefox 4 as follows:

  • Click Firefox 4 Button (Orange Rectangle Top left)
  • Click Bookmarks (not the hover) - CLICK IT
  • Click Import & Backup Button (Black Button)
  • Backup your current Bookmarks (it will save as JSON File)

2. Open up your old bookmarks file from Firefox 3.6. - Right Click, open up in Notepad. Or Drag the file into an open Notepad.

  • Highlight all the text in this file and copy (Edit, Copy or Control + C)
  • Locate the Exported Bookmark (JSON) File from Firefox 4 in Step 1.
  • Open in Notepad - (Right Click, Open with Notepad)
  • Delete all text in here and then Click Paste (Control + V or Edit Paste)

3. Save this File. (File, Save) It will remain a JSON File. 4. Go back to Firefox 4 and Click Firefox button (Orange button) and then Bookmarks again. 5. Restore the file you have just saved in step 3.

Should work for most people, I just did it
