Thunderbird has been marking messages as Read when they have not been read. Two mornings ago, I opened the laptop (Win 10 up to date). The night before I had over 50 Unread messages. That morning zero unread emails.

I did a quick search for it and it apparently happened back in 2014 and 2009. Couldn't see any remedies except to change the time the curser is on an email to infinity, but I don't think that is the problem.

The usual issue is a phone or other device that is accessing the mail account. In the case of google, they mark the mail downloaded to some phones as read and this synchronized to Thunderbird.

I am yet to see a case where the issue is actually Thunderbird.

This is not the source of my problem, but you have made me consider another option. I am running T-bird at work (unattended during the COVID-19 lockdown), and T-bird at home. I'll shut down the work version and see if that helps. Thanks for your response.

Never had this problem with older versions, but do now. I don't like this newer version.

I am having the same problem. I have version 78.3.2 (32 bit) running on Win 10. Messages that have not been read are not marked as unread. I end up manually marking the last message I read as Unread so I know that those that come in after that, even though they show as being read, they have not been read. This is the only email program that I use. Any ideas as to how to fix this?

As I indicated above, phones have email programs. Simply looking at them in your browser can also have them marked read. If the index is corrupt it could conceivably also occur. Right click the account in the folder pane and select properties and then repair.
