Ok. Im not sure when, But Thunderbird had an update a few days ago. I ignored it. Then Windows just did an update today. Now my Thunderbird Icon is switched to SetUp Icon and I can not enter my email program.

When I click on the Icon, it says this..

"Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade to Thunderbird. Do you want to restart now? "

So I click Yes...and it restarts...but nothing happens. the program isnt upgraded. and when i click on the Icon I get the prior message... "your computer must be restarted".....

I have alot of emails and addresses saved, so I dont want to lose everything and do a fresh un install and reinstall.

Any suggestions? Please help. I have business emails I need to send out soon today!

Thanks

I'm a long-time user of Thunderbird, and have a whole load of old emails stored in it. Which was fine, until my PC died last month taking my HD with it.

No problems, I have backups, but how to apply them to my new rig?

As I understand it, all my stuff is stored in these two folders (retrieved from my backup):

C:\Users\my-name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\yun4892o.default C:\Users\my-name\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\yun4892o.default

When I install Thunderbird on the new PC, it puts two folders in each of the Profiles folders: km5c5jql.default-release and y3kx2mde.default (the second of which is empty apart from a single times.json file in the Roaming version).

I tried removing the profile folders created by the new install and copying the yun4892o ones in instead, but when I launch Thunderbird, it says "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."

So what do I do? Do I perhaps copy some of the contents of the yun4892o folder into one/both of the new folders? I really don't want to lose all my old email!

I recently changed Tbird on my laptop from pop to imap. In doing so I gained access to all the imap directories and setup on my desktop account with the same name, but I lost the personal files in my pop setup on the laptop. The data is still there, but saved in an old profile in .sbd format. Is there a way I can recover this old profile and access it to possibly bring part of it into my new profile?

Hi, I've followed the instructions closely to migrate my profile onto another machine. Everything is there, all emails and settings are correct for incoming and outgoing servers. I have 2 windows 10 PC's with identical Thunderbird installations. The original one works fine, but the new one cannot receive emails - status just says '(email address) connected to mail.livemail.uk' and stays there.

The only difference is that the new version is 78.0.1 32 bit and the old one is 68.10.0 32 bit Has any kind soul got some ideas? Thanks Chris

Hi there. I recently had to unexpectedly reinstall windows 10 and it deleted all my apps including Thunderbird which I was using as my default email client, so I reinstalled Thunderbird, made a new profile for the time being so I can still receive my emails and then I began looking at how to get my old emails and folders back. I have really had no luck with this, I have read the usual instructions as to where your profile folders are found, I did find my old folder but when I tried to follow the steps to put it all back it didn't work, probably I did something wrong it was little too unclear for me to follow. In the process I renamed the original folder, however I copied it beforehand and still have the folder and contents sitting there. I'm not confident that I can do this procedure manually, so wanted to find a tool which find all emails on your drive and automatically does the work to send them back to your email if that is a thing. I would like to get all my folders back too if that is possible. Is there a tool anyone knows about which does this for you? The data is all there somewhere but I am clueless as to how to get it back into the existing profile I am now using. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Hello; What a mess! For many years I could just install new versions of TB over the previous versions to upgrade. Or on a new computer I could install the latest version and then just copy the contents of the profile folder(s) into the correct location on the new machine and all was fine. Okay around I believe version 48 or so there where glitches and I needed to go through certain intermediate version(s) but that's besides my point.

My wife's computer died with a hardware glitch and I replaced it with a better machine I had sitting around. Windows 10 all updated I downloaded and installed TB v78 and then transferred the profile. TB's installer gave NO WARNING AT ALL that there where incompatibilities to be expected. The result is that on the new machine TB has NO ADDRESS BOOK and in the Write widow the Send button is greyed out.

And from what I read here there seems to NO REASONABLE WAY to make TB v78 see or recognize the existing files abook.mab, abook.sqlite and history.mab. I even coaxed these files out of a June 2020 backup, no help.

I happen to have reasonably recent .CSV files with her address data but the import attempts fail with an UNHELPFUL message to the tune of "the input file has an error...". Despite the wording of the message NO ADDRESSES ARE IMPORTED and NO ADDRESS BOOK IS CREATED! When I look at the CSV file in a text editor they look perfectly correct to me!

Please, pretty please, what may I have overlooked or just not found yet that may help?

Does anybody have a solution for that?

Is there an add-on around that I can't find that could help me to get in my wife's good grace again?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, TIA. EikeH

Hello Support, I notice today when I updated Thunderbird program to new version 78.0.1 it started acting strangely, slowing down, not retrieving emails for specified folders, all folders change color to light gray, filters that were created are not responding I surely don't want go back and create them all over again. It has crashed on me several times so far, emails going straight to inbox when it works and not to their folders. Again, very, very slow... I'm using Lenova Computer with windows 10.

Thanks for your time,

Hello guys, I'm a thunderbird fanatic and use it even at work managing 10+ accounts. Up to Thunderbird 68, all was super fine:

The massive profile with 60+ folder was well organized with a handful of incredible add-ons to: - color folders - customize color account background - manage folder sorting The workflow was smooth and very productive: the folder colored to my like, the new email received were visible at a glance in the related folder by simply browsing and detecting the different accent in the folder name, and so on.

I always loved updates and kept the auto update on... until yesterday when my 68 has been migrated automatically to 78 !

No one of the necessary add-ons works anymore! No one of those fantastic the developer is anymore interested in upgrading them (changes are too frequent, and need to invest too much time to upgrade them) The interface is to uniform, I cannot customize colors in the same efficient way.... If I want the same 60+ nested folder sorting, I need to rename all of them... When a folder receives a new email the accent color (sort of bold blue) is nearly same as that of a folder with unread email (bold black)... Oh my god, what a mess !

Since no add-ons are available to re arrange the profile like it was with Thunderbird 68, my only option is to roll-back to 68... and stay there until the necessary add-on will get back to 78 (if any).

Do you know how I can convert back my profile just upgraded to 78 back to 68 ???

Please Please Please, help me ! Pietro

I converted all 25 years of my email to Thunderbird 78 and have an active calendar that I can add to manually but "Events and Tasks" import of an ics file of a new calendar from Outlook does not work. When I try to import, I get the error, MODIFICATION FAILED. I have looked at the eventual calendar items that Thunderbird 78 is trying to import prior to MODIFICATION FAILED and they show likely proper start and stop times but show nothing else just "time busy". I am looking for the calendar event title on the ics file and the detailed body of information stored on the ics file about the event.

I got a message from yahoo mail saying they will no longer support current sign in methods. They give instructions for how to update thunderbird for the new settings, which basically involves deleting the old yahoo account and setting up a new one. Following those instructions results in all of my mailboxes and messages being deleted -- what a brilliant solution! I have years of messages I don't want to lose. Fortunately I had a backup of my .thunderbird directory (this is Linux, thunderbird v. 68.11.0)

See here for how NOT to do this "upgrade": https://help.yahoo.com/kb/new-mail-for-desktop/SLN27791.html?impressions=true Don't follow those instructions or you will lose all of your messages and mailboxes.

So, is there a way I can delete and re-install the account settings using the automatic features yahoo wants, without losing everything?

I really need some handholding here... I've been using an ancient version of Thunderbird (v 12.0.1) forever. I am wanting to try the newest version for Mac (78, I think). I have a huge archive of past mail, plus multiple address books. I cannot figure out how to migrate all my old familiar items into the new version. I've tried several times but I just get stumped every time. Can someone walk me through the process of creating a new profile in v.78, then importing, or somehow transferring, all my old mails and contacts into the new version? Thank you!

My iMac is fried, unrecoverable... but I was able to save the whole Thunderbird folder containing Crash Reports, installs.ini, Pending Pings, Profiles and profiles.ini which I believe is everything, all my emails and accounts etc.

I have transferred the data to a Mac Pro running Mojave on a spare drive. I have installed a Thunderbird on my Mac Pro. I have tried numerous fixes but I couldn't get Thunderbird to see my emails, and it would start with Welcome and Set Up Existing Email Address which isn't what I want, but having tried a few ways I have become unsuccessfully familiar.

I have tried http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder_-_Thunderbird "Nothing you do works" (but I think it was referring to Windows so that's not good ;) by completely deleting the profiles.ini file, starting Thunderbird and thus creating a new profile, copying the "contents" of my of my Profiles/ui1yf25m.default folder and replacing the data over the top of the newly created Profile (which has nothing of worth in it) but it keeps the newly created working Profile folder intact thus Thunderbird should see the data and load all my emails and accounts - but it didn't.

The newly created profiles.ini file had 0dcrwgtx.default (which I moved all my files into) plus it had izoic061.default-release (so 2 profiles stumped me).

Wiling to try anything :) John

After upgrading Thunderbird from v68 to v78 over the weekend, everything looked fine, but then I realized some emails display badly with Windows 10 running in Dark mode. Changing the Windows settings to display apps in Light mode doesn't help (and make other parts of Windows Light instead of Dark mode).

What I'm trying to find in about:config is a flag to tell Thunderbird to run in Light mode as I can't see many of my emails. I can highlight the body, but that's just a lame workaround.

First image show how the text is unreadable because Thunderbird only changed the background layout, but not the text; Image on the right I highlighted the whole email so I could read the text.

I saw other suggestions that either require meddling with some .css file quite heavily, or installing some add-on that doesn't fix the problem.

We just need a configuration flag to prevent Thunderbird from using the Windows Dark Mode (or more generic, one that doesn't follow the Windows Light or Dark mode on us).

Thank you developers.
