Hi, I desperately need help please regarding Thunderbird Email. I factory reset my computer to get rid of a variety of bugs/slowness etc. I downloaded/printed the support info regarding profiles off the mozilla support site. i followed the instructions and saved my profile. there looked to be two profile file folders. i save them on an external drive. Reset my computer. put thunderbird back on, however the new version of Thunderbird doesnt seem to want to migrate my files back. Im really worried that Ive lost my whole history of emails. I have been with Thunderbird for more than 10 years and saved hundreds of emails in various email folders. Ive tried loading one profile folder, the other, then both and all other variations. ive made new profiles and tried to upload my old profiles and nothing works. I did manage to get a couple of my historical email folders to appear, and some sent items from years ago. But 95% of the stuff i still cant upload. Im not very IT savvy, but i believe ive followed the instructions properly. Is there anything else I can try. are my folders saved in the "server" somewhere that i can access? should i try an use an old version of thunderbird? any advice (in laymans terms) would be appreciated very much :) thanks jackie

Most of my old mails are stored in a MBOX file (previously gmail). I would like to import them. The import/export NG tool is not compitable with version 115. Any other add-on doesn't work. The normal import function of T-bird can't handle a MBOX file directly. Importing the zip won't work. How can I get my old mails imported?

TB version: 115.1.0 (64-bit) Windows 10 (corporate laptop)

Fresh laptop, fresh install of TB.

When trying to connect email@example.com (not really my email), TB correctly detects that my domain is hosted at Google, configures IMAP and SMTP for OAuth2, and pops up the window to authenticate.

Instead of an authentication prompt, I'm met with this error:

URL: https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/auth?response_type=code&client_id=<CHOMP>aq8lmia8j<CHOMP>.apps.googleusercontent.com&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2Flocalhost&scope=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2F+https%3A%2F%2Fwww.googleapis.com%2Fauth%2Fcarddav+https%3A%2F%2Fwww.googleapis.com%2Fauth%2Fcalendar&login_hint=user%40example.com

I did this many years ago on an old PC but don't remember how. I have a new laptop and I'm trying to import my Outlook PST archive to TB. It contains 30 years of important emails. I'm trying to get away from MS's Office - it's become too expensive.

I tried to use TB's tools>import>import from Outlook but I get an error message saying "no profile is found".

Can I do this within TB or do I need a 3rd party app? If so, is there a reliable one?

Thanks in advance.

I recently installed Thunderbird on a new computer.I set it up to use my Yahoo account. It does receive emails sent to Yahoo but will not send. Every time i click SEND it asks for a password and always says it failed.

Under settings, there are 2 servers, IMAP and SMTP. Each has a different password, but at one point I made them the same. It does not matter because the outgoing server keeps changing its password to about 20 random letter and characters. At one point I copied these random characters into the clipboard and posted it in after it asked for a password...and it still FAILS.

I am using version 81.0.19 Until I get this fixed it is useless. An annoying thing is that each time I start Thunderbird, it asks for the password...on my previous pc it remembered it. Both machines are Windows 10. Can anyone help?

I am on windows 10. My Thunderbird was upgraded automatically from 91.11.0 to 102.0. I've lost all my emails, folders, accounts, and profiles, including Giganews (usenet). I tried re-installing TB 91.11.0 and restoring my profile folder, but I still cannot access my old folders, accounts, or profiles.

What did I do wrong? Is there any way to get back to a working Thunderbird? I have numerous backups of my old Thunderbird profile folder.

I am running: $ thunderbird --version

Thunderbird 91.13.0

to download all the data in my gmail account via POP3, but Thunderbird seems to be making assumptions about where to put your data and I haven't found a way to tell it where to put it; so, since it uses the user's home directory, the only way I think you could easily put the data where you want is by changing it, but I can't:

$ usermod --move-home --home "${_NEW_HOME}" "${_WHMI}" usermod: user user is currently used by process 1141 $ sudo ps -aux | grep 1141 user 1141 0.0 0.1 15600 9144 ? Ss Nov05 0:00 /lib/systemd/systemd --user user 50636 0.0 0.0 6244 712 pts/0 S+ 06:42 0:00 grep 1141

Unless they both try to exclusively access /etc/passwd, I can't understand how /lib/systemd/systemd could possibly relate to usermod.

Why is it TB doesn't have --data-type (POP3 or IMAP, ...) and --data-dir options you could enter in the command prompt at start up?

I am hacking my way around to be done with it. I am sure you have a very solution to my kind of problem. Any suggestions?

I just completed changing the storage location for Thunderbird email messages, from AppData/Roaming to a new Thunderbird folder under Documents. This was to ensure that my computer quick-backup utility would save emails. I followed Mozilla instructions and all went well, everything seems still to work just fine, except that one POP email account shows nothing in the appropriate Thunderbird Inbox now. Sent messages show up, and new incoming messages to that account go into the Inbox and show, but all the old ones from before the location change just don't populate the Inbox listing area. The Inbox file at the new location has messages in it, I can see and read them with Notepad, but there's no corresponding Inbox message list for that one account. What could have gone wrong, and is it possible to somehow 'activate' the old messages so they show, or move them again from the original AppData/Roaming location to the new one? Thanks!

I had several address books with selected contacts under my Personal Address Book so that I was able to select them for sending emails to selective groups. Unfortunately my system crashed and I had to reinstall my OP system including Thunderbird. When I upgraded to a new version of Thunderbird I was unable to migrate the contacts within those list to the new address books, unfortunately I don't remember which version caused the change except it was when they moved the address book icon to the left side of the screen. I had copied the respective sub address books to .csv files. How can I import the selected .csv files to a sub folder under my Personal Address Book? Also, how do I copy/paste individual or groups of contacts from one file to another?

My wife has been using Cox Webmail for years and has about 30 subfolders with stuff she needs to keep. We are finally pulling the plug with cox and so that email will be terminated with them.

My question - If I setup Thunderbird as IMAP does it just point to those emails and folders on the Cox servers, or does Thunderbird actually keep those emails within itself locally? My fear is that I set the Cox account up in Thunderbird and all appears well, I then close the Cox account and then Thunderbird is empty.

I've got forwarding turned on in the Cox account and that works fine, but I see no option within Cox to export all the subfolders.

Appreciate any help!

Thanks,

David

Hi folks!

I had to configure a new email which I run from the Thunderbird platform. I backed up a year's worth of emails in a ZIP file before deleting the old email (apparently I had to) and I have followed the instructions to import the old emails. The imported file appears in my 'local folders' section in Thunderbird but these files appear to be empty. I cannot find information or previous questions addressing this issue so I would appreciate any suggestions. The ZIP folder is smaller than 2GB.

Many thanks in advance!

I've just got a new Win 11 PC and have followed the method to transfer all the emails in my Local folders to the new PC. TBH I've tried many of the methods without success.

I've copied the folders from the relevant directory on the old Win 10 PC onto a USB. With TB closed on the new PC I've copied the folders from the USB to a new Folder in Local Folders directory.

When I open TB, of the ~7,500 emails I copy, only 282 appear

I've tried this many times now with no luck What am I doing wrong please?

Hi,

Help article recommends installing installing version 31.8 of thunderbird and importing outlook files using that, then upgrade to the more recent version of thunderbird. However having installed 31.8 when I try to import the pst files, I'm told that thunderbird can't find mail to import. There appears to be no option to browse for the files. My outlook files are in the usual folder - documents/outlook files but thunderbird can't find them.
I'm trying to import historical emails and haven't set up an email account yet in thunderbird. Would it make a difference if I set up the account then tried to import old emails or would something elase make a difference. Any ideas would be very welcome.

Regards Steve

Hi.

I've recently set up a new computer. I'm a Thunderbird user.

My old computer is running Windows 10. My new one runs Windows 11. I'm running the same (current) version of TB on both computers.

I can't get my emails to move from one computer to another. I know, this sounds dumb, but it isn't; my email provider uses a weird hybrid of POP3 and IMAP, and just "connecting" didn't do the trick; in fact, adding my account to TB under 11 ate most of my emails on the server because the default TB/POP3 setting kills all old emails after 14 days.

Fortunately, my old emails still live on the Windows 10 computer because it DOESN'T do that.

I have tried export/import, but that doesn't work because my account is very old, very large, and creates a 5GB file. I've tried just MOVING it, but TB isn't picking up the old stuff correctly.

I'm pretty sure this is a TB 10/11 incompatibility for one simple reason: when I export just my address book from the 10 installation the import fails on the new (11) machine, BUT when I export it from another machine that's already running 11 I can import it on the new machine.

How do I export mail from TB on 10 and import on 11 ?

Thanks!

Migrated to a new laptop. Fedora 37 Thunderbird 102.8.0 (via Flatpak)

Was able to migrate Thunderbird profile without issue. However, I can not see any of my email folders or the contents of my inbox (All Folders). Under Account Settings/Server Settings/Message Storage/Local Directory is a path to my email folders. Thunderbird see this, but ignores the contents. Instead it created a new inbox, INBOX-1.msf And then every time it starts it creates a new iteration, INBOX-2.msf, etc.

Removing all *.msf files did not change a thing. Still an empty inbox and no other folders shown. And the iterations of INBOX-N.msf continue.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Hi, I hope someone can help me.

I'm using Thunderbird Version 102.4.1 on a 7 year old laptop and it's getting to the end of life with numerous driver and non responding problems. Also, it is not compatible with Windows 11. I have linked 3 Yahoo mail and 4 Gmail accounts to Thunderbird on it and they work really well. All are IMAP server settings. I have just bought a new laptop, an early Black Friday deal, and hope to set it up the same as my existing one, so when the old one dies, as it's likely to, I will still have access to the same programmes and emails.

I know I can access Gmail emails direct on any device and they are always up to date - is that called synced? What I don't know is if all email accounts will be synced or the latest - if I use Thunderbird on both laptops. If I delete an email on one device will it be deleted on the other device.

If this is possible, do I download Thunderbird on the new laptop, then set up the accounts for each email and just enjoy from there, OR do I have to copy the profile from the old device to the new one.

I love browsing, streaming etc. but hate trying to get my PC set up or sorting out problems with it. Presume I know very little if you are replying. I have never had two working laptops before so never had to worry about syncing.
