Upgrade from Firefox 56 to 62: Can it be done from Menu-->Help-->About Firefox->Update?

Hi:

I'd like to upgrade from Firefox 56.0.2 to the latest version, which I believe is Firefox 62.

A few questions:

1) Can I do this via Menu: Help-->About Firefox-->Check for Updates? That does seem to be the most direct and is how I used to do it before the Quantum version arrived

2) Will the bookmarks I now have in the Bookmarks Toolbar display as the new Bokmarks Toolbar along that horizontal (and then vertical) toolbar?.

I have very many of those. They are vital to me and would be painstaking to have to copy all those from some .html bookmarks file.

3) I saved login information and passwords for many sites. Will those still show on the Firefox 62 if I update it as described above?

Thanks: eliuri Firefox 56.0.2 Windows 7 Home Premium -64 bit

I decided to finally try Firefox Quantum hoping that some of the features that were removed from the previous versions would have finally made their way by now, but right after installing it I got stuck trying to restore the status/add-on bar.

The only thing I found was a way to place a bottom bar using userChrome.css: http://www.optimiced.com/en/2018/02/11/restore-status-bar-in-firefox-quantum/ But this is pretty much useless as it doesn't allow me to move any button to it.

Has anyone found a solution to this issue? I've read a forum post somewhere from last year saying that some code would be introduced to Firefox that would allow extensions to fix this issue—is it true? Was it done?

Back to Firefox 56 for now.

Firefox has just updated itself to this horrible new version.

56 I had everything the way I liked it now it looks terrible and I've lost everything I had customised about 56. I hate having the tabs at the top of the screen isn't it possible to have them directly above the webpages and below the web address? What about the File/edit/etc menu how do I get that back? What about the custom toolbars I had like bookmarks and the one at the bottom of the screen for all the extensions I had?

I think I will just quit and use Chrome. Being able to customise Firefox was its selling point for me.

When are these morons at Firefox are going to fix their garbage browser? I can log in to my gmail with IE, Edge, Chrome, Safari and any other browser out there. Only with STUPID FIREFOX I get Corrupted Content Error. I cleaned the cache, cleaned the cookies. It worked for one day. Today I get the same problem again! Still no support for session history! And they have not fixed the Session History problem for over the year, IDIOTS! Everyone should dump this stupid browser and go to any other, but this piece of garbage!!!!!

Just had to rewrite this post because this site inadvertently refreshed screen and lost my content!

I used Firefox 56.0.2 because I NEED to use legacy add-ons that ensure security and safety, these add-ons have no alternative in Quantum and no update. All of my other Add-ons have versions that support this edition of Firefox.

TODAY three of my important Firefox add-on were DISABLED BY FIREFOX, with no warning or caution and without my authority.

The updates were

LASTPASS UBLOCK ORIGIN GHOSTERY

I think it is extremely unlikely that these three companies unilaterally and randomly all decided to stop using the add-ons on the SAME DAY. I might have left those companies reviews expressing my concern by now that they have been disabled I can’t leave a review. So there is this fake positive picture painted of reviews on Mozilla site.

So I can only presume that it was MOZILLA FIREFOX that FORCED this on me, pitting my loyalty of one set of add-ons with another.

I am DISGUSTED by this behaviour from Mozilla, oh yes I am sure they will want to blame the add-on providers but it will be under their suggestion, rules or whatever.

I still can’t update the legacy add-ons (which still work) nor is there any alternative in Quantum.

I was quite happy in my time shell using add-ons I trusted and relied upon, that are secure in their own right, SO WHY IS MOZILLA MESSING WITH ME.

I can guess the responses will be just go ahead an upgrade Firefox, but WHY SHOULD I BE FORCED KICKING AND SCREAMING into a version of Firefox that does not meet my needs.

The bigger question is WHY WOULD I TRUST MOZILLA FIREFOX when they can mess with my productivity and give me this problem at their whim when I can choose Opera, Chrome in all of it’s variants and not have this kind of problem. They may be as bad but they have not hurt me already.

So before I go I have to ask this community if they can help me.

1. Is there a fork of the old firefox that allows the install of legacy versions of add-on, i.e. one that does not have Mozilla poking it’s nose in? 2. Is there a setting in About Config that may enable me to override this disabling of the above add-ons?

I have not listed the legacy add-ons that still work because they are clearly not the problem and I am sure that there are many thousands of users that have different legacy add-ons that face this same problem.

It was bad enough that EVERY time I used firefox I got these “your version of firefox is critically out of date” nagware messages and that even after closing them I got more nagging when I scrolled done.

It is MY computer, MY risk, MY choice, if I can’t TRUST Mozilla to let me work in peace then I really do not think I can risk using a later version of Firefox.

If anyone has any constructive advice THAT ANSWERS MY QUESTIONS ABOVE to get this working again I would appreciate it.

Hello , What happens to my current bookmarks & folders I already have saved on my home computer if I sync my Firefox work account to my home Firefox browser as I don't want to lose any of my home computer bookmarks and folders?

Wondering if it will override everything removing what I have already bookmarked or if it will just add my work bookmarks to my home account where I will see both?

Also will everything I have bookmarked on my home account be added after the sync to my work account? Which bookmarks will supersede? Will my home bookmarks get added to my work account?

This is really important as there are some home bookmarks I don't want to lose and that I also don't want synced to my work account? Thanks in advance and I don't see any details anywhere on this but it is really important for someone to know before syncing a work and home account.

Please do not bother telling me about updating my account as the new Firefox does not work for my work flow at all and this should not be related to sync question at all as syncing has been there since that version was created. I hate the square tabs as I have to move my window around often and not having the big tabs pinned in 5 rows of 5 where they are 2" by 2" squares are absolutely necessary as I hate the new tab pinning option where the pins are super small and you get all the other stuff below that now that is not needed and lose rows of pins. I could go on but until they have options I will be staying on my current version which would not affect the sync outcomes.

Hi I was using an older version of firefox but had to change my OS from win7 to Win10. I used Password exporter to save all the passwords to a back up file. I installed the latest Firefox but had no way to import my saved passwords as Password exporter no longer works on later versions, which resulted in installing Firefox 56.0b2 (64bt). Installed password exporter and imported my passwords. On a number of ocasions, I had to open password exporter to see what the password was when I went to a imported bookmark, but once entered, the auto fill worked and opened the site. This worked fine for about a week when, for no apparent reason, the bookmark star dissapeared and the menu bar - bookmark this page had stopped working. I would like to run the latest Firefox but dont know how to import from the password exporter back up file as the latest version doesn't allow password exporter??? Hope someone can help? :)

Updates – Last updated 14:35 PST May 14, 2019. We expect this to be our final update.

  • If you are running Firefox versions 61 – 65 and 1) did not receive the deployed fix and 2) do not want to update to the current version (which includes the permanent fix): Install This Extension to resolve the expired security certificate issue and re-enable extensions and themes.
  • If you are running Firefox versions 57 – 60: Install This Extension to resolve the expired security certificate issue and re-enable extensions and themes.
  • If you are running Firefox versions 47 – 56: install This Extension to resolve the expired security certificate issue and re-enable extensions and themes.

Updates – Last Updated: 17:04 EDT May 9, 2019

A less technical blog post about the outage is also available. If you enabled telemetry to get the initial fix, we’re deleting all data collected since May 4. (May 9, 17:04 EDT)

Mozilla CTO Eric Rescorla posted a blog on the technical details of what went wrong last weekend.

Updates – Last Updated: 19:28 EDT May 8 2019

We’ve released Firefox 66.0.5 for Desktop and Android, and Firefox ESR 60.6.3, which include the permanent fix for re-enabling add-ons that were disabled starting on May 3rd. The initial, temporary fix that was deployed May 4th through the Studies system is replaced by these updates, and we recommend updating as soon as possible. Users who enabled Studies to receive the temporary fix, and have updated to the permanent fix, can now disable Studies if they desire.

For users who cannot update to the latest version of Firefox or Firefox ESR, we plan to distribute an update that automatically applies the fix to versions 52 through 60. This fix will also be available as a user-installable extension. For anyone still experiencing issues in versions 61 through 65, we plan to distribute a fix through a user-installable extension. These extensions will not require users to enable Studies, and we’ll provide an update when they are available.

"Updates – Last Updated: 11:51 EDT May 8 2019 (From Mozilla Blog)

Firefox 66.0.5 has been released, and we recommend that people update to that version if they continue to experience problems with extensions being disabled. You’ll get an update notification within 24 hours, or you can initiate an update manually.
An update to ESR 60.6.3 is also available as of May 8th. We’re continuing to work on a fix for older versions of Firefox, and will update this post and on social media as we have more information."

A Firefox release has been pushed — version 66.0.4 on Desktop and Android, and version 60.6.2 for ESR. This release repairs the certificate chain to re-enable web extensions, themes, search engines, and language packs that had been disabled (Bug 1549061).

There are remaining issues that we are actively working to resolve, but we wanted to get this fix out before Monday to lessen the impact of disabled add-ons before the start of the week. More information about the remaining issues can be found by clicking on the links to the release notes above. (May 5, 16:25 EDT)

"Last Updated: 00:54 EDT May 5 2019

Updates:

Some users are reporting that they do not have the “hotfix-update-xpi-signing-intermediate-bug-1548973” study active in “about:studies”.

Rather than using work-arounds, which can lead to issues later on, we strongly recommend that you continue to wait. If it’s possible for you to receive the hotfix, you should get it by 6am EDT, 24 hours after it was first released.

For everyone else, we are working to ship a more permanent solution. (May 5, 00:54 EDT)

There are a number of work-arounds being discussed in the community. These are not recommended as they may conflict with fixes we are deploying. We’ll let you know when further updates are available that we recommend, and appreciate your patience. (May 4, 15:01 EDT)"

Running FF v56.0.2 (do NOT suggest updating in ignorance--I'm running this for access to almost 10,000 .mht files). Tried to install an update to the legacy NPAPI extension NoScript (v5.1.8.7), but Firefox pops up the message "This add-on could not be installed because it has not been verified." This occurs AFTER having changed the about:config preference "xpinstall.signatures.required" from "True" to "False". Why is Firefox not honoring the preference change? Especially considering Mozilla won't allow signing of legacy add-ons; this is the only alternative.

IF U DONT UPDATE FIREFOX, EVENTUALLY IT MAKES ITSELF IMPOSSIBLE TO USE UNTIL U UPDATE LIKE GOOD LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THAT IS THAT FIREFOX DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE CRUSHING BLOW IT LANDS ON THE HEADS OF THOUSANDS OF FAITHFUL AND LOYAL FIREFOX USERS. THIS BEING SAID, IN ORDER TO PUT MY QUESTION IN CONTEXT, IS AS FOLLOWS: FAST DIAL AND QUICKFOX NOTES ARE MY LIFE; UNFORTUNATELY, FIREFOX IS THE ONLY BROWSER THAT I WANT TO USE. SO I AM STUCK WITH HAVING A BROWSER THAT RIPS AWAY THE VERY FOUNDATION OF MY LIFE ON MY COMPUTER. FAST DIAL IS REPLACEABLE; I DONT LIKE ALL THE OTHER 'FAST DIAL WANNABEES' BUT THEY ARE ADEQUATE. QUICKFOX NOTES IS ANOTHER MATTER ENTIRELY: NOT ONE OF THE HUNDREDS OF 'NOTES' [AND IT SEEMS I HAVE TRIED EVERY ONE] THAT ALL SHOUT ABOUT THEIR GREAT FEATURES AND EASE OF USE, [NOT ONE] COME ANYWHERE CLOSE TO SERVING AS AN ADEQUATE REPLACEMENT FOR QUICKFOX NOTES [EXCEPT ONE]. SO WE COME TO MY WOE, BECAUSE THE ONLY REPLACEMENT I WANT FOR QUICKFOX IS "OPENOTE"!!! NO, I DID NOT SAY ONENOTE" AND THERES THE RUB. I HAVE SPENT HOURS SEARCHING AND GOING AROUND IN CIRCLES TRYING TO FIND OPENOTE THE SECOND TIME. I HAD IT BUT I LOST IT AND I DO NOT UNDERSTAND ENUF COMPUTER TALK IN ORDER TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO GET IT BACK FROM MY COMPUTER WHERE IT HAS HIDDEN IT FROM ME. PLEASE HELP. After a system wipe, I installed firefox v56x and downloaded and installed the Password Exporter add-on. After a few days I had some problems and re-installed the FF v56x. Now, I cannot find anywhere to download the legacy Password Exporter add-on. The proper link from google reveals a (Mozilla) page not found message. A 'cashed' page loads for about 1/8th of a second the goes to the (Mozilla) page not found. Other sites (Like Toms guide) only links to the page not found.

Can anyone ...PLEEEEEEEASE.. give me a link to a working download for the Passord exporter add-on.

I am having so may issues with FF this really is the last chance. I had FF for years without any problems, now it seems as if the devz dont give a monkeys about people and just want to race their competitors.

All help is appreciated.

Hello, I 'm amongst the people that reverted back to Firefox 56 after the Quantum update for the add-ons alone. (mainly Classic Theme Restorer and NoScript) I would like to know if there is a way to install Quantum along with v56 on the same windows 10 PC.

Having both versions installed will allow me to continue using my favorite add-ons, while monitoring Quantum for new updates and add-ons , trying to customize it to my liking and hopefully stick with it at some point.

Thanks in advance.
