Last night Firefox insisted that it be updated and so I allowed the update on my somewhat antiquated laptop. It's the laptop that my wife uses and because she's far from tech-friendly, things need to be simple and basic. She didn't want to update it because everything was fine for the limited browsing that she uses the laptop for but for the sake of doing as we're told, we let it happen.

When the laptop restarted and we went to open Firefox, a damned User Profile Box appeared - one that's got me scratching my head and cursing. What the hell is it? Choose User Profile Then inside the box; Create Profile Rename Profile Delete Profile She doesn't have a 'profile' - what the hell is it anyway? Why should we make this change - what's it in aid of?

Whatever, we opted to click on Rename Profile and found that the existing profile was 'User', so I renamed it with her name - and then started Firefox. A blank Firefox page appeared - with no favourites; no log-ins; no records - NOTHING. Preferences? NONE. What on earth has happened? She had a selection of physiotherapy exercises in her favourites - WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY? THEY WERE VITAL FOR HER HEALTH AND NOW THEY'RE GONE. Just what the hell is going on? Why do we need to go through all this - where have all her records gone?

Ok - I searched the internet for an answer. I then found a similar case from back in 2015 - and the member (because it was on this forum) came to the conclusion that it was best to use Chrome instead - and I reckon that's what my wife will have to do. If this change can't be undone and if her saved information can't be accessed (and EASILY - not via a string of convoluted instructions that neither she nor I will understand) then you've just lost another customer. Answers please - and simple ones, not a long guide through the mess that's inside Firefox.

Hi there,

I refreshed Firefox because I found it was running slow, and now my saved logins and passwords are not in my settings anymore.

They are still on my phone but they won't sync now to my iMac desktop.

Is there a way to restore them or resync!

Thanks for your help.

And suddenly.. there was Google translate asking me to translate a certain website. For the life f me (and I googled myself silly) I CANNOT get it to stop. even when I tell it I do not need it.

I've tried every trick I could find, yet to no avail.

I've NOT installed any add ons that would enable this. And it only happens with one website (hannants.co.uk) and no other (as far as I can see now). This is really ticking me off.

Like I said I googled to no avail and no extension within Firefox that I can see that are enabling. Can any one please help me is turning this piece of crap translation off?

Thanks

Harald

Hello, i have at this moment TWO versions off ff in use. my standard install wont open any file on the LOCAL drive AND severall BUTTONS are not working so now i use the 'standalone' version that just opdated to 87, nice but the OLD version 78ers is now broken or hacked

i tried to look up profile.js etc but perhaps on debian those migth have a different name ? i noticed that with other progs and configs aswell. is it the permisions.ini file ?

the general.config.obscure_value is NOW 0, but WAS 13

i hope there is a simple solution. if i continue with 87 and delete 78 , what will happen? after RE-install off 87esr al still is blocked. C

When I Login to one of my Financial sites web page, that does NOT recommend Firefox because of this Login issue. My stored Login and Password work fine the first time I Login. I also get a message to Save the new password. If I save this Login update the last character of my Password is changed. One example I have tried with my normal account Name but a Password ending in "$" when the saved Password is viewed it has been changed to "%24" and the Login fails now as it should. I am not sure if this is a Firefox or web page problem? This ONE web page is the ONLY place I have run into any Login issues. Login seems to be the only place the web page doesn't work correctly. The web page fix is NOT to use Firefox but to use other browsers. I am using the latest Firefox version 87.0 with windows 7 but this has been an ongoing problem over several years.

Is having Enhanced Tracking Protection ON the same thing as having Firefox set to block known trackers? So if I turn OFF Enhanced Tracking Protection, Firefox will no longer be set to block known trackers?

So this visual bug has been happening on my Nightly install for months now. The "Site information for website.com" menu that appears when you click the lock icon in the address bar is basically unusable for me. The menu's header, "clear cookies" button, and arrow button are all fine, but the text in between is covered in globe icons. The "Connection Security" sub-menu that the arrow leads to has a similar case. (See screenshot.)

Huge disclaimer: I am using Shadowfox, which modifies a Firefox install to make UI elements darker. It has made text difficult to read for me at times, but it has never produced any really strange artifacts like this one as far as I can tell. I do have a Developer Edition install with no Shadowfox and it doesn't have the issue. However, maybe this is a common Nightly issue. (I guess this wouldn't make sense since DE is even more experimental than Nightly? I think?)

Maybe this is a problem for the Shadowfox team. Ultimately, the solution I really want is native support for a full-fledged dark mode, with black or gray color for UI elements such as the context menu. If this isn't going to happen and Shadowfox is indeed the source of the issue, I'll gladly let them know. But I thought it would be good to share with Mozilla, and why not the community, too. (Feedback tool is down right now.)

Looking for a solution/work around to the new FF protocols which REFUSE exceptions, which has cut me off from streaming from LEGITIMATE web sites like https://news.stlpublicradio.org/ and other sites as well.

I have used FireFox since Netscape, but am now using Chrome which works fine.

Security is great, but when the security Trumps the ability to actually USE the web sites, then how is that different than just blocking the "offending" website.

You should ask yourselves why the FF market share is so low.

You guys need to come out of the clouds and smell the digital earth where most of us dwell. I love you all for what you do, but you seem to be blowing it. Please get it together.

I have enabled HTTPS-only to everywhere.

Unfortunately I have a site that I need to use for work. The site is only available over a VPN, so security isn't a huge concern to the site operators.

The really unfortunately part is that the webserver seems to be poorly configured. So if I go to "https://dumb-work-url.com" then it resolves, but then just shows me a 404 error. I really need just vanilla "http://dumb-work-url.com" to work. As far as I can tell the override option that is on the padlock only works if I land on the functioning page.

I can disable HTTPS-only, and then go to the site, but then the padlock doesn't give me the option to disable HTTPS-only for just that website. I'd really rather keep HTTPS-only on all the time since I'll need to be visiting this site quite a bit.

I need a way to add this url to an HTTPS-only "off" exception list before I visit it. Is there a way to do that?

on the https site, I turned off HTTPS-only (under the padlock), but that setting either isn't working, or isn't applying to the http version.

Firefox Firstly, let me start by acknowledging the wonderful work the team of volunteers do to in producing an FREE excellent browser for which I have been a fan since your inception. However, unfortunately Firefox has been caught up in the hysteria of the planet over security issues with the Internet.

Undoubtedly there are such issues, just as they currently are with Covid 19 such issues, but the solution to Covid 19 is not to carpet bomb the whole of the planet - but, in actual fact that is what Firefox is now doing with websites security.

I build websites for a hobby and currently have published about 50 over the last 20 years , many of those are informational only sites. So, there is no exchange of data, so no avenue for any security breach or for damage to be done to either my website any visitors computer or the server upon which my websites resolves.

My first website was published in 1998 even way back then we all knew that you approached any website with caution. However with a bit of due diligence it was possible to make a reasonable judgement as to the nature of validity of the website and those that constituted some risk and those that constituted none.

One of the websites I publish is goofygoogle.com. I have had this website since I purchased the domain in 2001. The website is informational only, however despite the fact it has been around for that period of time and you can find out who the domain owner in any WHOIS search, for the first time ever Firefox is now telling their browser user/visitors “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead”.

This, is in spite of the fact there is NO potential security risk 'Ahead' -AT ALL, in visiting this site.

Can we please wind back the hysteria or egotism or whatever else is the basis for this overreaction OR if we don’t want to do that, can we please get even smarter so that we actually can interrogate the site properly to determine if there actually is a “Potential Security Risk Ahead” before we ‘slander’ it?

I’m in your hands

Thank you

Today I found out that Many apps on my system work in the background and slowing down my machine. I enlisted the consulting assistants of an expert and was told that the biggest are Adobe and Microsoft. I had a cleaning done to my system and the results were amazing. I disable Apps I didn't need, uninstall App I did not use in a long time and disable services that did not provided me with any substantive experience or improvement in productivity. The results were amazing. My system was running faster than I have ever seen it run, including the first year after I purchase it. Well, about 2 hours later, I got this notification from Microsoft saying that I have to enable these optional services because Edge would make it better for me to serve the web and have a custom experience and get tailored adds based on my activity. If I had a choice I would pick No Adds. After I read their notification that I had difficulty reading and understanding little of it, I felt pressure to signed up with Edge as my browser. These services were eating my resources like there was no tomorrow and were effecting my productivity level. Microsoft's notification included a screen shot of the changes I did today in my settings with the disable buttons in Privacy and Personalization areas. I have all the required setting about diagnostics, etc. enabled, is there anything I can do to prevent them from using me like a cheap prostitute? Can they shot my account down for that? Is there any other OS providers I could get?
