Firefox needs a limit on memory usage. I was developing a tiny web page on Linux (PopOS) and accidentally created an endless loop in Javascript that ate memory (by growing an array). My entire OS became inoperable and had to be hard-rebooted. I was surprised this could happen due to Javascript (a sandboxed browser language), running in a web page (a sandboxed app) running in a Firefox browser that is supposed to protect users from the world wild web. One errant line of legal Javascript in HTML should not equate to a denial-of-service attack.

A sensible approach would be similar to the nice warning given when a script takes too much CPU, offering the user the choice to continue or stop the script when a tab exceeds some reasonable size: a fixed MB size, or say 10% of real RAM memory.

Ideally there should also be some hard limit calculated by Firefox according to the machine's available memory and Firefox's reasonable percentage of it. For example, maybe limit Firefox (all tabs combined) to 50% or maybe 75% of real memory, so that the O/S has a reasonable chance to remain operational so that a bad tab can be closed. Otherwise, Firefox could cause the O/S to lock up, resulting in data loss if there are tabs or other apps outside of Firefox that have unsaved changes.

Thanks for your consideration!

Firefox breaks my desktop environment's scrollbar style and (gradient) color and in version 98+ refuses css to approximate it

I work on kubuntu 20.04 with plasma 5.18.8 desktop environment. I have a QtCurve-based custom application style, which I almost match with css for GTK apps. Firefox has to be an exception by itself! Not only that, but it changes my ability to customize its interface, from time to time and even changes access to such ability, on some updates.

My scrollbar customizations in userChrome.css and userContent.css do not work any more (other CSS changes still work, for menu/addressbar/tabbar/bookmarksbar orderint and tab styling). I had to resort to settings in user.js file, to get a 20px width scrollbar, suitable for my big screen, but... it gets very wide when I increase the focus, on some webpages and becomes very ugly! Furthermore, I cannot make sense of the proper use of "ui.themedScrollbar*" settings and the scrollbar and its slider result in the same color. These are my settings in user.js:

user_pref("widget.content.gtk-theme-override", "backwater"); user_pref("widget.non-native-theme.enabled", false); // Use GTK-3.0 gtk.css: set to false user_pref("toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets", true); // Use userChrome.css & userContent.css: set to true user_pref("widget.gtk.alt-theme.scrollbar_active", true); user_pref("widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.size.override", 20); // If nothing else works, fix scrollbar width to 20px user_pref("widget.non-native-theme.gtk.scrollbar.round-thumb", false); user_pref("widget.non-native-theme.gtk.scrollbar.thumb-size", 1.0); // originally 0.75 user_pref("widget.non-native-theme.gtk.scrollbar.allow-buttons", true); // it was true, anyway... user_pref("layout.css.cached-scrollbar-styles.enabled", false); user_pref("layout.css.color-mix.enabled", true); user_pref("widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.style", 4); // wide scrollbar theme: set to 4 user_pref("ui.themedScrollbar", "#bad1f5"); user_pref("ui.themedScrollbarInactive", "#668cc4"); user_pref("ui.themedScrollbarThumb", "#e4e4e4"); user_pref("ui.themedScrollbarThumbHover", "#e4e4e4"); user_pref("ui.themedScrollbarThumbActive", "#668cc4"); user_pref("ui.themedScrollbarThumbInactive", "#bad1f5"); user_pref("browser.dom.window.dump.enabled", false); user_pref("extensions.ui.sitepermission.hidden", false); user_pref("fission.experiment.max-origins.qualified", true);

Either with the "ui.themedScrollbar*" settings or without them (and cleared from the prefs.js file), the scrollbar and its slider result in the same color, unless I (tryingly) click on some place on the scrollbar outside its slider; then I can see the slider, _only_ for the duration of the mouse-down event (which causes up or down page-hight scrolling).

The default, very thin scrollbar, as well as my modified wide scrollbar with invisible slider are both useless to me! I have even tried fx-autoconfig (https://github.com/MrOtherGuy/fx-autoconfig) to make the scrollbar CSS work, but no result. At this point, I am considering switching to another browser, despite the trust I have to mozilla, for my data and privacy.

Having just upgraded my Debian 9 machine to Mint 20, this has updated my firefox browser.

Everything was going fine until I came across the problem where by all image downloads are saved as webp images, a format that my favourite image editing software cannot handle.

This is a bit of a pain and has made me start looking at alternative web browsers.

Just thought you should know how simple things can cause a loss of support.

Hi. I've noticed similar messages like this after previous Firefox upgrades, but not for the latest.

My Firefox ESR was automatically updated to 78.11 on June 1, 2021. Since then I have not been able to access Amazon Prime. The error says:

Your web browser is missing a digital rights component.

In your web browser’s address bar, type about:addons, press Enter, and then on the left, click Plugins. For the Widevine Content Decryption Module, select Always Activate, and then refresh the video’s page and try watching the video. If the video doesn’t play, go back to Plugins, click the gear icon at the top of the page, and then click Check for Updates. When the plugins have updated, refresh the video’s page, and then try watching the video.

The suggestions get me no where. It is already on "Always Activate" and newer updates are available.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling a early version, but this does not work either. I get a message at the top saying that "Firefox is installing components needed to plate the audio or video on this page. Please try again later." "Later" is apparently never.

Has any else had this issue? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Today I updated my Firefox Developer Edition to version 89.0b2 and now I just can not look at this browser anymore, "Inspired new tab design" is taking too much space and now became largest and at the same time least information-dense panel in my entire desktop! I searched around the web for a bit in hopes that I will find a theme or an add-on that will revert this particular change but no luck. I really want to revert to old UI look (at least tabs bar), there should be default theme or option to get back to old style. After some investigation I found userChrome.css but don't really want to install it (maybe this is actually the way of doing this kind of styling). Please help me revert UI design to old one.

Firefox 93.0 64bit Linux Mint 1.0

When I close (X) the window, my session is not restored. I have checked all the settings and verified that they are set correctly. Then, I found that when I tried to quit the program via File menu, it says that I have two windows and three tabs open, yet I only have on window/one tab open. I can not find this other window... What does this mean? Have tried refreshing the app, safe mode, and disabling the extensions that I use.

Thanks!

When I download a file and click on the downloads button to bring up the Downloads menu, I often just want to open the Linux Mint file manager in the right folder so I can move the file to a more appropriate place.

In the menu, there's the little button to the right of the listed downloaded file with "Open containing folder", but if I click on that, FF opens the downloaded file, not the file manager.

Obviously this wasn't always like this, but I don't recall doing anything that might have caused the issue. How can I set FF back to the default action of opening the Linux Mint file manager?

Thanks!

Hello everyone :)

From a folder, I have loads of Firefox profiles from different eras. I am looking for a way to export all the bookmarks of each of the profiles to an HTML file like the manual method (Library > Import and backup > Export bookmarks to formal HTML), but all in an automatic way by script. I like the HTML export from Firefox because it allows you to quickly navigate using keywords, either in links or in the folder names I gave.

Is there a simple solution that would reuse, for example, the same export code as Firefox ?

Thanks in advance With adelphity estebann

Hi all :)

From a fresh Linux Debian Bullseye I try to connect to a local machine with Firefox (v97 64-bits) by its hostname (avahi server with default domain "local") with the port 6180 bound to a remote web service port (61 is the distant machine IP and 80 is the forwarded port).

When I want to open this URL : http://bionic.local:6180/ FF displays "We can't find this site ... Unable to connect to server at bionic.local ... check your network connection and firewall"

BUT ping bionic.local works perfectly and resolve the good IP address from the Chromium navigator the same URL works without a problem, I can open the distant web site.

This workaround works : add a static resolution in the /etc/hosts file : 192.168.0.71 bionic bionic.local => so FF works in the expected way for now ! But as I said this a workaround and a bad solution.

I supposed too the port was blocked because I accessed an unusual port. So I tried this without success.

How the hell make that FF v97 allows me to use an unusual port ? Or is it bound to the domain "local" which is no more accepted by FF ?

Thank you in advance for your help. With adelphity, lnj

After a crash, or even after shutting down the computer without closing all Firefox windows, Firefox will restore all the windows and tabs from the last session on restarting Firefox.

There can be many reasons why this may not be preferred behaviour for many users: Sometimes Firefox or the computer crashes because too many windows and tabs are open (and other applications running), killing Firefox may be a measure against malicious pages trying to hijack the browser, discarded pages after shutdown do not need to be restored, ...

So is there a way to make Firefox immediately ask whether to restore the session, like it already does after the second crash? This should actually be an option in the settings.

Hi all, i have a Firefox 98.0.1 on Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon. It's been running perfect but since yesterday when i try to visit accounts.google.com to log in to Gmail or visit youtube.com the tab always crashes. The tab crashes as soon as the site is loading so i'm not even entering anything. I have Windows 10 running on the same machine, problem does not occur there. I also have Chromium on Linux, problem does not occur.

I have tried clearing cache, disabling all plugins, disabling hardware acceleration, creating new profile, refreshing Firefox, running Firefox in troubleshooting mode, completely removing Firefox including hidden files.

I yesterday had a problem with the file system or something. A black screen showed some error message, i quickly googled it, typed in something like sdfk or sfdk and it repaired something broken on the hard disk i guess...

All crash reports have the signature "_dl_relocate_object"

Can anyone help? I've submitted a crash report with the ID 1bb292d9-61e5-4af1-942d-b5bee0220318 Thanks

edit: I also ran a RAM test with memtest86, it ended with not a single error. After trying to revert to a previous system snapshot i ended up with a black screen and code lines telling me to install a kernel first and some spooky grub mode. In the end i re-installed the whole OS, now it works.

I have found a few pages about address rewriting; how do I disable them all ? - searching single word into google (type "keyw" in about:config to disable it) - hiding http when not using https - trying to add "www" and ".com" around a single word when the word did not resolve

I consider most of them as security issues for various reasons.

And when editting an URL, I want firefox to keep showing the full url as it was invoqued; not add https randomly, or removing http other days. And the more I disable some, the more new ones appear.
