I want to stop Firefox from silently updating in the background during browsing sessions. When it finishes updating like this, currently open tabs stop working and I can no longer open new tabs. The only fix is to restart Firefox. This is a problem if I am, for instance, going through a set of web forms as the information I enter will then be deleted and I have to start again.

When I have used Firefox on Windows, the requirement to restart Firefox to install updates has always been indicated by some change to the settings button on the top right of the window. With Ubuntu, the update is downloaded and installed without any action from my part, and given that it is quite disruptive this is unacceptable.

I have tried a number of ways of changing this, none of which work. Under the general settings tab, there are no options for changing the way updates are handled. Settings under about:config appear to do nothing. I have app.update.auto set to false, and app.update.notifyDuringDownload is set to true. I have attempted to circumvent these by setting a policy using the policies.json:

{

 "policies": {
   "DisableAppUpdate": true,
   "AppAutoUpdate": false,
   "BackgroundAppUpdate": false
 }

}

None of these have made the slightest change to how Firefox handles updates.

I am running Firefox 110.0.1 (64 bit) on Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS, but I should point out that this has been a problem for the last several years of Firefox versions on the same OS.

1) javascript by bookmarklet in address bar; 2) and 2a) firefox settings' over-protection?

Hello,

This is of GENERAL INTEREST, since "Click & Clean" is not available from FF anymore, whilst other people have obviously hijacked the name, and other FF add-ins and add-ons are of very doubtful origin... not even speaking of (notwithstanding its pricing...) CCleaner having bought (some time ago, but it invariably appears at, or near, the top of any google search for browser protection) by We-Spy-Avast. So:

1) It' been known for many years that FF refuses js in address bar; bookmarklets have been praised as a work-around. Thus, a bookmarklet named "some", with keyword "s", and with "javascript:alert(1);" even continues to work today, by entering "sEnter" in the address bar. (The alleged work-around to reset about:config?filter=browser.urlbar.filter.javascript to false having been abandoned many years ago...)

2) It seems that FF tries to wrongly "protect" its settings by all means? Speaking about about:preferences#privacy where the "Inspect (Q)" doesn't work, but where by looking at the source code, I was able to identify the "Clear Data" button as button id="clearSiteDataButton" or then: data-l10n-id="sitedata-clear" (whatever that means...), whilst

2a) on that page, the buttons (among others) "Clear Data" has the "l" (lowercase-L) underlined, "Manage Data" has the "M" underlined, and ditto for the "Manage Data" dialog then, in which the button "Remove Selected" has the "R" underlined, the "Save Changes" button comes with an underlined "a", and the the "Remove All" has its first "e" underlined, etc., etc. - whilst NO a, r, e or whatever, also with "alt" or with "control", then would ever activate or trigger those buttons, which arises the question, "WHY come those buttons with an underlined character, when they are not available BUT by - physical-only? - mouse click anyway?"? Or HOW would I then access those buttons by keyboard, their underlined characters obviously not working anymore? (?)

2 again) And so, I changed the above (then working) bookmarklet's url to: javascript:document.getElementById("clearSiteDataButton").click(); and now, when I trigger that bookmarket on the about:preferences#privacy page, nothing happens:

Have I made a js mistake here? Or does FF simply prevents any FF user's try to protect themselves, with material-on-board?

(I understand I can just send a mouse click to that button by AutoHotkey or similar, and that's what I currently do, send a click to x1150, y1320 into the FF window, but obviously, those values depend on my screen (size, resolution, etc), and my hiding both the menu bar and the bookmarks toolbar...)

(We're not 3-years-olds, but perhaps, the FF CEO has such children at home, and then extrapolates for the masses of money she gets? And no, even without add-ins, and lots of memory, FF has NOT been brought to a rally stable state yet...)

I have been having trouble after logging in to my bank's website. They use a security feature that logs me out after 15 minutes of inactivity, which is great. About two months ago or longer, after logging in, it would log me out after 10 seconds. Sometimes I can log in and stay logged in after repeated log-ins, but the problem gets worse, until often I cannot stay logged in for more than 10 seconds at a time, no matter how many times I try. I've worked with tech support at my bank, and they have never seen this problem before. They recommended clearing my cookies and cache, but that only seemed to help once. Anyway, I cannot see doing that every time I need to log in to my bank, since I do that several times a day. So, they recommended that I switch browsers. I tried Microsft Edge. Problem solved. I have no problem staying logged in using Edge. I prefer Firefox - I have been a loyal user for decades. Can you help me figure this out? - Terry Mulcahy, Albuquerque.

I'm in a situation where a website that I've always been able to access is unavailable in Firefox 110.0.1 (Mac Monterey). It IS available in Chrome. When I go into Firefox troubleshoot mode, I can reach the site. So, supposedly, that's pointing to a problem with an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. So I disable ALL extensions, use the default theme (which I've always used), and turned off hardware acceleration. After all that, I STILL can't access the website. So troubleshoot mode is doing something else. What might that be? You can try the website yourself - http://fiso.spiritastro.net/test.html. That test site doesn't work, nor do others in that subdomain. Any assistance with this would be much appreciated.

I am trying to reset my password as it has not been changed in a while. When I go to the change password area of my profile, I type in my existing password, and the new one, and then it says "Incorrect Password" every time. I know that I am typing it correctly, and I have even used the exact same password to login to this very device, and my mobile device, to double and triple check I have it right. It works when logging in to Firefox, but when used in the change password area it tells me the password is not correct. I am at a loss what to try next.

Do not recommend me to click Advanced -> Accept the Risk and Continue. I want to disable the warning forever for all the hosts. For example, Chrome supports flag --ignore-certificate-errors, I need something like this.

I have set a master password for firefox Logins and Passwords. When I try to look at Passwords sometimes the login screen pops up to allow me to enter the Master Password. Other times I get the screen (see attached photo) that has a login button. When I click the button the screen flashes but does not pop up a password window. If I close all tabs and other windows of firefox browser then start only one firefox browser window it will ask for the master password. That fixes it temporarily but I have to close many tabs and several firefox windows.

I just finished setting up my new pc with Windows 11 (Feb 2023 updates) and installed Firefox 110.0.1) and wanted to transfer my logins, passwords, etc, from my Android 12 Phone's Firefox 110.1.0, and other pcs. A window popped up giving instructions how to sync my phone, as follow:

      • Sync Firefox on you phone or tablet. 1) open Firefox on your Mobile Device. 2) Go to the menu (<ios>&<android>menu examples shown) and tap sync and save data. 3. Tap ready to scan and hold your phone over this code.***

I'm 73, have used Firefox since first release in 2004. In all these years I have never seen SYNC in the instructions to "sync and save and to point the phone at a barcode-thingy" or at least not in this world. The instructions made it seem like SYNC was right there to see, but I had to dig thru layes of options to finally find it. You can blaim it on my 73 yr old brain, I guess, but nothing like these instructions exist in Windows or Android firfox. What in the world are your programmers smokin' these days. I would just as soon open up Edge or Chrome and did up the passwords I need to log into my banking and creditcard accounts...heck, it seems like MAYBE I should just dump Firefox after almost 20 years and just use those other browsers. At least there instructions are much simpler that this ol' man can follow. Please have someone review your published helps info on your webpages, and help those Sr. citizens like me to more easily find what we need without calling up grandsons or granddaughters for help (their parents are worse than I am at most techy stuff!) When I sign in to my Ancestry Account, I am unable to access my DNA list showing matches and other DNA information I have been without this information for some weeks and have contacted Ancestry twice (on 23/2/23 and 6/3/23), however the service was not working prior to these dates. They report that they are aware of the problem and are in contact with Firefox (who are working on the problem) but do not know when it will be rectified. They stated that Firefox was updating their system and this is the cause of the problem. Ancestry recommended I change to Safari or similar but I do not wish to do this. Can you give me any idea when this problem will be rectified? Regards Anne Sylvestre

The problem is that every time I try to do a search it makes me prove I'm not a robot. There is a message : "Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network. This page checks to see if it's really you sending the requests, and not a robot. Why did this happen?"

When I click on "Why did this happen" I get this:

"This page appears when Google automatically detects requests coming from your computer network which appear to be in violation of the Terms of Service. The block will expire shortly after those requests stop. In the meantime, solving the above CAPTCHA will let you continue to use our services.

This traffic may have been sent by malicious software, a browser plug-in, or a script that sends automated requests. If you share your network connection, ask your administrator for help — a different computer using the same IP address may be responsible. Learn more

Sometimes you may be asked to solve the CAPTCHA if you are using advanced terms that robots are known to use, or sending requests very quickly. "

This is happens on my Lap Top PC, I only have it on once in a while, I usually use my desktop and no problems with it. I have done all the recommended things, like clearing cache, delete all cookies, used Troubleshoot mode, did a install refresh, etc . All with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Yesterday I did a stupid thing, I managed to lock myself out of my account in Firefox. I had set up a secondary account, but that was locked out too, once I managed to change my password. (I know, silly me...)

So now I created a new email address to be able to create a new account in Firefox. I would like to set up one of my 2 'regular' email addresses as the secondary account, but they are associated with the original Firefox account. Is there an amount of time after which I would be able to use my previous 2 accounts again, or is that a never?

(I don't feel like creating another new emailaddress especially for this.)

I am sorry for having been so dumb and now wasting your time, but I am looking forward to your answer.

Kind regards, tjar

Firefox should again respect the user's wish expressed by "xpinstall.signatures.required".

The arguments for this are relatively clear and in line with the principles of free and user empowering software original practiced by Mozilla and Firefox.

Users should not be prevented from making their own decisions and customizing the browser or, worse, given an incentive to switch to Chrome due to encroaching opaque motives.
