Hi. I have approximately 26 folders in gmail and 34 filters that sort messages from my inbox to the appropriate folder on the mail server. I am planning on rearranging the filters and would like to know if there is a preferred way to optimize them. For example, am I better off having individual filters (say from several health providers) that end up saving respective messages into a 'Health' folder OR should I have 1 filter that looks for each provider in turn (OR condition aka 'Match any of...' ) then moves them to the 'Health' folder.

Not worried about performance, but more wondering if one method is more efficient than another.

Also, I seem to recall seeing in the filter help pages that it is preferable to have local storage for filters as opposed to having the mail server sort them out. Why is that?

kind regards, Kirby

I have been using Thunderbird for about 5 yrs and I strongly prefer it to Outlook. However, my PC has a small solid state drive (128 GB) and Thunderbird is creating very large files. The first time this happened I uninstalled Thunderbird and then reinstalled it and picked up about 20 GB on the hard drive. I have always installed it with the standard selections. When space became short again, I started deleting or moving files and applications. I would free up 15 GB, but the next time I booted up, that space would be gone. Using WinDirStat, I found a folder in my Users/myname/appdata/roaming/Thunderbird that was 70GB, more than 1/2 my drive. As info, the total space used for email on the Gmail server was only 13GB. I uninstalled Thunderbird but only picked up a small amount of space. I manually deleted the Thunderbird folder and picked up 70 GB in storage. Outlook seems to have no such folder, I also learned that deleting an email message in my inbox folder does not delete it from my Important or from my All Mail folders and most importantly the Gmail server. I was suprised to find that the all mail folder on the server contained nearly 200,000 messages. The only way to delete them was going to gmail using a browser and deleting them directly on the server. I would like to return to Thunderbird if these problems can be resolved.

I accidentally deleted an email account through Tools- Account Settings - Account Actions - Remove Account.

Is it possible to restore this account and its associated sub-folders.

I have installed Thunderbird on a separate PC and restored my latest backup, which unfortunately is 4 months old, meaning that I am missing 4 months worth of emails.

Might it be possible to link to files/folders containing my messages prior to the removal, perhaps by recreating the email account or might there be some other method in which I could achieve this.

Any thoughts you might have would be VERY welcome.

Kind regards - Deirdre

PS. We are using Thunderbird Version 128.0.1esr Build: 20240717233102

I am using Thunderbird 102.12.0 (but the problem may have started before the update) I have had this problem intermittently in the past but it only affected 1-2 emails but today it seems to be most of the emails in my inbox. It seems that multiple emails are being combined into one email so when I look at my inbox it will tell me who it is from and the title, but when I click on it the sender and title may disappear (or may not) and the email is multiple lines of text & code (not necessarily the body of that email it can be 1 or multiple other emails in there all mixed up with or without different sender details). I can view the emails with no problem on my iphone and using webmail so it seems to just be a Thunderbird problem. If I look at the email on my phone or web browser I can see it perfectly and forward it to myself and then it seems to be ok. All help appreciated! Thank you Jean

I've been a Thunderbird user for years. I have no idea what they changed recently, but it's incredibly, incredibly SLOW, almost to the point of unusability. Even something as simple as deleting emails.

I usually do these in chunks -- select multiples and delete. We're not talking about hundreds of emails at at time here, just maybe 5-15. Select them all, hit delete, and it should take just a couple of seconds to delete the messages. It did, in the past. But lately, it's taking so long that I could leave and make a sandwich, and when I come back, maybe it will be done. Maybe it will still be working, though, or maybe it will have locked up because it was taking so long.

It's pretty difficult to get work done at this rate.

After the last update, my Tbird no longer functions as it used to. Problems:

1. I can't find the button to begin a new email. I have to go to the account CuriousQuestor@centurylink.net, then click on the 'Write a new message' link to open a new email.

2. My files disappeared. I had 100 or more files that I used to keep information for quick referral. They included copies of correspondence, URL links, important things like coded passwords and even recipes. They used to be listed on the side, and now I can't figure out any way to get them back.

3. The new version of adding a color tag sucks. It used to take just a click of a button. Now I have to click on 'more' then click on the color tag. I use tagging very frequently to help sort out the importance of emails. Can you move it back on the next update, please?

4. I CAN'T FIND THE *_)(^%$&()!!! BUTTON TO CHECK FOR NEW EMAILS! Where did you put it???

5. Is there a way we can refuse the latest update, if we're happy with the version we already have?

Thanks for taking the time to help. Overall, you guys really do a great job - and should be commended more for your work. Today was just the day I "hit the brick wall" ! Thanks again.  ;D

I have both Gmail and Aol accounts on my installation, 115.9.0. My aol account is behaving funny. If I choose to display only unread emails, the screen goes blank and no messages show. I then click on sent message, click back on incoming and the messages reappear in the "all" messages display. The Gmail account is just fine, I can click between "All" and "Unread only" with no issues. Can't figure out what's going on.

I supply software that uses TB to send emails with an attachment (via MAPI - an invoice) I have a number of customers for whom this has stopped working. I tested all of these with the usual fixes. The app has full access to the folder containing the file. The app is set as administrator and is inside the firewall. I have set default mail app to TB. TB is set to check as default on startup. Yet windows keeps saying we need to define a default email client. One customer solved the problem by buying a new PC. I have another customer who has this problem on a new PC. There may be a common denominator in Microsoft Office which on loaded onto the PC's. If that is the problem then that is Microsoft denying access to TB? Has anyone had this problem and can suggest a fix I would be grateful.

I now have the problem that I am on a large payment page and switch back and forth between FF and another app (to copy payment-relevant data). Unfortunately, FF does a page refresh every time it is brought back to the foreground from the background. And all the data already entered is lost! This is a fairly well-known problem with FF on Android! Chromium manages this better and leaves the memory management to Android. Why can't FF do that? Why can't I switch off this feature? I can't edit any relevant websites with the FF. I have to use Chrome for that! Hooray!

Starting maybe 2 months ago, when making online purchases, I could not enter a credit card number into the box to make a payment. (Name, address, etc is okay.) The cursor would not "register," & the box would be greyed out. I'm running Windows 11 Pro, Firefox 129.0.2. It's not my antivirus, because I can go to Microsoft's browser (ugh), & make my purchases. Ideas? Thanks!
