why when I select a webpage from a search page it opens then switches back to the search page.

when I search and then select a page from that search the page opens and then the view switches back to the search page. The page you selected is still open, but you manually have to switch back to it from the search page.

Are you saying that click on a search result item opens a new tab?

There are three prefs, accessible via the about:config page, to control the focus if you click a link.

  • browser.tabs.loadInBackground (normal links)
  • browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground (javascript)
  • browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground

Also, if the page you are opening contains Flash media, it could be a bug in the Flash player protected mode that affects Windows 7. More info and workarounds in this thread: Opening New Windows and Shockwave Flash.
