Download internet speed loss is about 60% independent of server choice

My download internet speeds (Comcast cable) drops from >100Mbps to about 35 Mbps independent of what server I choose. This is based on speedtest.net. This includes servers in the US and other countries. This is the case for both Windows 10 and Android devices. Upload speed is throttled to death by Comcast, so it doesn't change.

Is this speed loss typical for VPN? Is it because of encryption?

I was thinking of using Mullvad before Mozilla offered VPN, should I change and might that make a difference?

Hi Martin, I have a couple of questions for you. Are you testing your speed through your browser, if so which browser are you using? If you have DNS over HTTPS enabled in your browser try disabling it and see if your speeds increase.

Switching to Mullvad would be of no benefit to you as all of the Mozilla VPN traffic goes through Mullvad servers. Also, try downloading and installing the Speedtest stand-alone desktop app for Windows. You can get it here: https://www.speedtest.net/apps/windows

This will bypass any slow downs that may be happening due to some browser settings. Check your results between the desktop app and the online version and see if there is a difference. Other Windows DNS settings can also greatly affect bandwidth. Let me know if you need more help.
