Have you checked your firewall? That might be what is blocking the connection because it does not recognize the new version.

If you dislike automatic updates, you can disable that. In the about:config window, set these:

• app.update.auto - set to false
• app.update.enabled - set to false
• app.update.silent - set to false

Keep in mind you never want to disable automatic updates as that will leave you open to security holes in older versions of Firefox as they are found.

Just because I disable automatic updates does not mean that I do not update. I do not like that happening without my control.
