Why does Firefox retain pages I have closed or migrated away from, sometimes 10 deep?
While browsing, Firefox continues to retain, in the background pages that I have already left, why doesn't it close them, sometimes as many as 10 to 20 pages?

I'm not sure what you mean by background pages.
When you right-click the Back button, you can see numerous entries for that tab's history. Is that where the problem is? Firefox will remember up to 50 pages in back-forward history for each tab.
I can give you the setting to change if that's what you want to change, but I'm not sure. Or is the problem that Firefox keeps opening new tabs, so you have more and more tabs on the tabs bar?
