I have a desktop Mac (OS 10.6.8). Is the downloading/installing process the same for Firefox ESR as it is for Firefox for personal use?

I just took my final update for Firefox for my Mac. I can't upgrade to OS 10.9 in order to continue to receive updates from Firefox. My Mac processor is too slow to run on a later operating system. Trying to avoid buying a new Mac as long as possible. I hired a Certified Apple Consultant to switch my browser to Firefox earlier this year and set up a new printer for me. I Just want to know if it's easy to download and install the ESR version of Firefox for my desktop. Thanks for any help/advice.

Thanks, James, for your reply. I just need to clarify something... In order to change to the 45.0 ESR channel, do I need to uninstall Firefox 48? Or do I simply install 45 ESR over 48? In either case, what will happen to my bookmarks, add-ons and extensions? Thanks again for any reply!

I have used Mac OSX very little compared to Linux and Windows to know if installing over is safe to do on Mac.

Your settings like bookmarks, passwords, extensions and such are not in Firefox program folder but in a separate Profile. The Plugins are on system and not installed in Firefox like Extensions and Themes (complete) are as you can see in about:plugins

Also the word Addons is a general term Mozilla has been using since Firefox 2.0/3.0 days to group together the separate Extensions, Themes, Plugins, search engines, dictionaries, language packs etc.

The only difference with the ESR channel is it gets supported longer with most of the same security fixes the regular Release channel builds gets. It was intended for Enterprise users in mind more.

The future Firefox 49.0 and newer Releases will require OSX 10.9 or newer. There is a option of using the Firefox 45 ESR branch to get security updates for a while still as 45.8.0esr will be out when Firefox 53.0 is released and 45.8.0esr will be the last unless Mozilla extends 45.0 esr support.

You can stay with Firefox 48.0 for now or can change to the 45.0 ESR channel now if you like.

The major version the ESR will be based on will be Firefox 52.0 and when the then older 45 ESR branch is made end of life there will be no more support for OSX 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 then.

Also for those who have a older system with a older cpu that does not support SSE2 then the Firefox 45 ESR will be a option then also as Fx 49.0 drops support for older cpu's that does not support SSE2.
