I always open new websites in a new tab, not a new window. A lot will do this automatically, I always allow a spare tab at the end of the row to catch anything which wants to overwrite my present tab.

HOWEVER some sites - notably Tripadvisor and some hotel booking sites, automatically open a new window - sometimes behind other windows. This is a great nuisance. I want to use this site, but I don't want them parking new windows on my desktop where I might accidentally close the wrong window and lose my long term tabs.

Is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks for any information.

Hi, Firefox has a preferences to open tabs instead of windows. You can got to ☰ > Settings > General > Open new windows in a new tab instead.

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion. It's Options ... General so it took me a while to find it. (Dont' worry stuff like this happens over again. All the different menu configs on Firefox are a headache to the non-tech, non-developer user.

That box is already checked. These sites are doing something with extra windows that isn't covered by that.

Any ideas?

I'm fairly sure this is not pop up boxes as POBs are supposed to come up without your permission ... whereas these "extra windows" contain information i have asked for - but I don't want it in a window.

Thank you I will in due course try what you suggest and report back. This may take some time as I am getting busy.

Hi

I have worked my way through the first two bullet points. After a lot of staring, and promising to be careful, it began to make a certain amount of sense and I followed the most simple set of directions and altered the "3" in browser.link.open_newwindow. to "2" (it took me a while to work out that is what bullet point 2 above actually means.) And took screen shots of everything so that I had some record of what I had done, and where.

I am a person who can handle a large dictionary with confidence, but knows next to nothing about the inner working of software. I won't know if this has "worked" for a while but I will be keeping it in mind and will keep the second instruction (3rd bullet point) by me for trial if the first two don't cover the ground.

Thank you for your help!

Yes, I have just realised my mistake, and I have changed it back to 3. It was quite hard for me to retrace my steps ... so it was SET CORRECTLY TO START WITH.

So it must be the "java" setting. I am going to see if I can get someone to help me look at that ...

Hi

I tried the first one and it was already set correctly.

I looked at the second one (Java) and realised, thanks to the warning, that if I set it to Zero 0 it could interfere with pop up boxes I need on the main screen in the future.

So I decided to leave it. I will try complaining to the Websites concerned instead.

Thank you for your help. Unless there is anything to add, I will leave it there.

PS Scary ...
