Bookmark disappeared. Where is it?
Between sessions (I was away from my laptop; it went to sleep) but without closing Firefox, a Bookmark disappeared from my Bookmark Toolbar. It will take many hours to partially recreate it. It was a list of alternative journalist/news sites, so this looks like nefarious NSA intrusion. Firefox is collaborating with/has no protection from such intrusion? Firefox solutions (I don't remember the name of the page) suggests that I check for multiple profiles. I have checked Profile. There is only one profile (somethingorother.default). Where is my Bookmark list (a Bookmark on my Toolbar titled News -- a few dozen sites). The list and title of Bookmark gone -- all other Bookmarks are still there. Firefox solutions suggests resetting Firefox to Default, mentioning that "essential information" will be saved. What is "essential information?" What will be lost? All bookmarks? How does one decide whether to reset to Default on the basis of this kind of information?

Don't even think about doing a Refresh or "resetting to default", overkill for a simple issue like that.
If you haven't closed Firefox since the problem occurred, try opening the Library dialog, Ctrl+Shift+b or "Show all Bookmarks".
In the Library dialog:
(1) Make a fresh backup. See: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
(2) Check the Organize menu for whether "Undo" or "Redo" is available. I can't predict whether either will bring back the missing bookmark, but since you have a fresh backup, you could give it a try.
P.S. If the NSA is in your computer, no software is going to help you, you should disconnect from the internet whenever you aren't needing to be connected.
Thank you very much. After posing the question I again clicked around under Bookmarks and found the instructions for restoring from a backup. I chose one from a couple of days ago, so not a degraded one, but up to date. Everything is now back to normal (at least as it appears). So what happened? Glad to know I can fix the problem if it happens again. And I will close down my computer when not in use.
It seems Mozilla has not included a Trash folder in Bookmarks. Or is it somewhere else? It is so easy to accidentally delete a folder (that could contain thousands of bookmarks accumulated over several years). Why not have a Trash folder there? We've got the useless Unsorted Bookmarks, Bookmarks Toolbar but not Trash? Restoring is an option but a really dumb one as you may have done so much work since the previous day. A Trash folder is the intelligent way to go. Maybe its somewhere else. But who would hide it? Is there an extension I wonder if Mozilla has deemed us unworthy for a Trash folder?
