Recently updated Firefox to version 42.0 on 2 PCs. One is Windows 7 the other Vista. No probs with Windows 7. However had to uninstall and re-install Trusteer Rapport on Vista as it disappeared from Firefox. My main concern however is that whilst secure sites like banks etc all show the green padlock in the address bar, on W 7, they are almost all showing the grey globe on Vista - how can this be if I'm using the same version on both PCs? Any answers gratefully received. LADYVIGIL PS I'm not very computer literate so be kind!

You are using HTTPS links like this forum uses and not open HTTP links?

What security software (firewall, Anti-Virus software) do you have?

You can check for issues with the certificates just to be sure. There is security software like Avast and Kaspersky and BitDefender that intercept secure connections and send their own certificate.

Open the "Add Security Exception" window by pasting this chrome URL in the Firefox location/address bar and check the certificate:

  • chrome://pippki/content/exceptionDialog.xul

In the location field of this window type or paste the URL of the website.

  • retrieve the certificate via the "Get certificate" button
  • click the "View..." button to inspect the certificate in the Certificate Viewer

You can inspect details like the issuer and the certificate chain in the Details tab of the Certificate Viewer. Check who is the issuer of the certificate. If necessary then you can attach a screenshot that shows the certificate viewer.

I am sorry I don't understand the question " You are using HTTPS links like this forum uses and not open HTTP links? How would I know and have control over this? I am using Microsoft Essentials on both my PCs and have not had a problem before. Some of the address bars eg firefox and yahoo show the full address with green padlock...https:// site name etc but others eg Barclays Bank just show the "grey globe" and "www.barclays.co.uk" . I understand I can check as you suggest but I just want it back the way it was and can't see why there is a problem on Windows Vista which is not on Windows 7.

If you open a web page in a tab then you see the URL in the location/address bar. Firefox suppresses the httpp:// protocol by default, so you only see the domain part and the trailing file path if an open connection is used. When the connection is secure like on this forum then you see the full URL including the https:// protocol and a green padlock (Mozilla Foundation(US))
