Is there any way to create a Bookmarks folder that exists as a file in a Windows folder of my choosing (my Dropbox folder rather than my Firefox profile)?
As an example, I can create an Outlook email archive file (PST) and place it in a shared folder like Dropbox, and then open it and work with its contents from multiple computers.
The built-in import/export function in Firefox fails on two levels: having to manually manage the import/export every session, and more importantly, not being able to import/export anything less than the entire bookmark file each time.
I've looked at add-ons but haven't had much luck there.

- In about:config you can toggle browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to True to activate bookmarks being saved to the older bookmarks.html format, which is currently unused or only used for the basic bookmarks that come with Firefox.
- Then use this extension to relocate the bookmarks.html backups to a folder of your choice. http://www.pikey.me.uk/mozilla/?addon=bookmark-backup
That will get you to having bookmarks being saved in a format that can be easily edited and automating a new file being created every time Firefox is closed. Along with having a number of days worth of backups being saved, I have been doing that since Firefox 3.0 was released, when bookmarks storage was changed from bookmarks.html to places.sqlite.
Problem is that extension needs to be "signed" by Mozilla to work beyond Firefox 43; not sure if the developer - Pike - is planning to submit it for signing or just let it die.
Any ideas about doing it differently is probably beyond the scope of Firefox Support.
