Cannot use categories with tasks.

I've configured some categories in the options tab for calendar tasks but in the tasks tab, I can't use categories. The list appears in the dropdown, and I can put the checkmark next to the category, but then when I close the dropdown nothing happens and the check is gone if I reopen. Cannot get the categories to apply to the tasks. Is there some trick to this? Thanks.
