That is probably not possible.

(I seem to recall proposals that MS may be forced to allow use of alternative browsers in some legal jurisdictions)

For best results, configure automatic updates from the Windows XP Security Center in the Control Panel. If you need to use a browser, use IE. I always found update scans interminably slow, so I left IE doing that in the background while I lived my life in Firefox. :-)
