Without my changing any settings, the mouse stopped being able to open previous tabs. They become locked. I can go back to a previous tab using the keyboard commands. Why is this happening? How can I return the power to the mouse?

You can try to find the real cause. Safe mode disables the installed Extensions, themes (Appearance) in Tools (Alt + T) > Add-ons. Hardware acceleration is also disabled - the manual setting is Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Use hardware acceleration when available. All these settings can be also manually toggled/changed to isolate the cause after exiting safe mode and starting Firefox normally.

The cursor/mouse now works in safe mode. What should I do next?

I solved the problem, removing an extension that was installed on my computer when I opened a game.
