gmail hangs up in firefox 3.6.8

I've been using gmail with firefox for a number of years. Since upgrading to 3.6.8, I can start gmail and it shows my inbox, but then firefox freezes. I've tried running ff in safe mode, and have deleted all cookies, but things are still the same. Other sites are fine. I can run gmail in google chrome without problem.

I'm running Windows XP SP3.
