the Password manager sign-in window used to open every time I entered a password protected site. Now it just opens every time I open Firefox which is often. It also sometimes takes its time interfering with typing, "stealing" my typing thus causing a typing error somewhere else. It is very irritating.

Are you possibly using Sync?

Sync stores its credentials to sign in to the Firefox Account in the Password Manager and that will Firefox ask for the master password.

You can try to set this pref to false on the about:config page to see if that has effect.

For starters, there is no Password Manager in 71.0 64bit Firefox.

I could not find any "password manager" link even though on this page there are links to password manager. It appears that phrase occurs only on the log-in, I presume (I cannot see the login window at this moment.) I found Logins and Passwords and found something in Options --> Privacy but nothing like about:config.

In any case, the solution I must enact is to open firefox once and not close it for the rest of the day. I don't work like that. I like the old Firefox that opened the "enter master password" window whenever I opened a site for which I had already entered and saved a password. Why did that go away?
