I have Firefox 29.0.1 - Mozilla26 - 1.0 My instructions to complete an online form for a workplace include the following: To configure Firefox

   Select Tools
   Select Options...
   Select the Advanced icon
   Select the Encryption tab
Under Protocols, select the check boxes for Use SSL 3.0 and Use TLS 1.0

There is no encryption tab for the Advanced icon. How do I update my encryption?

This changed a while ago to being a hidden preference.

By default, Firefox 29 will try TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.1 before dropping down to TLS 1.0 or SSL 3.0. If necessary, you can prevent Firefox from trying TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.1, but for security reasons, it is better not to turn those off.

Is there a problem with the website not handling this correctly? If the site seems to work fine, I would skip over that step in their instructions and not force Firefox to use only the older protocols.

The website blocks me from going any further in completing the form unless I specify TLS 1.0 and SSL 3.0, so I need to temporarily change the encryption. I can't skip over the step, unfortunately.

Hi Raven123, here is how you can limit the protocols used by Firefox. This applies to all sites, so after you're done with the site that requires this limitation, please return to the default for maximum security.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste tls and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the security.tls.version.max preference and change it from 3 to 1 and click OK.

For future reference, the possible values are:

  • 3 = TLS 1.2 (default)
  • 2 = TLS 1.1
  • 1 = TLS 1.0
  • 0 = SSL 3.0 (oldest / weakest)

I can't recall whether that takes effect the next time you connect to the site (in the same session), or whether you need to exit Firefox and start it up again before it takes effect.
