Command Clicking a link in a window to open a new tab opens in the wrong window

more options

I just upgraded to Firefox 4, and I'm having a problem where I command-click on a link in the window I'm currently reading, expecting it to open in a new tab in the same window. Instead it opens in another window, perhaps the last one that I was using. Occasionally it will work correctly and open in the window I'm reading, but more often it just picks another window, seemingly randomly, and opens there.

This occurs when the window is a "dialog" window. Firefox 4 now redirects new tabs away from a dialog window to another window, typically the last other one you used.

I haven't read of a solution for this, and someone already has posted a request to change this on Mozilla's bug-tracking system. You can vote for the bug to be fixed if you like.

I created a potential workaround to break pages out of dialog windows, but it's not very well developed. You can read about it in this earlier thread, which also has a link to the bug:

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense because most of my windows open from my own bookmarking facility which opens news windows via Javascript. I'm guessing that Firefox interprets this to be a dialog instead of a window. I do hope they change that behavior, if you provide a link to where I can vote for the bug I'll be sure to add my voice.
