message selection changing spontaneously

Since upgrading to Thunderbird 38.4.0, I have noticed the selected message will change spontaneously.

I have my mail sorted by date oldest on top, newest top on the bottom.

I am using a unified Inbox view. I think this only happens in the unified view but I am not positive.

Normally, when I am done reading mail, I will leave the last message or last message still marked as read selected. Any new mail will appear after that without changing the current message selection. With the upgrade to Thunderbird 38.4.0, sometimes the selected message will change to a message I received in 2012 while I have Thunderbird minimized or just not actively looking at it. So far, I cannot correlate this with any specific event.
