Bookamarks do not work, firefox 11.0 and windows XP SP3
I can't get bookmarks working. The bookmark field is visible but empty. Saving a bookmark does not add it to the list. Trying to import from Explorer seems at first to work but no bookmarks is imported or visbile, All settings is checked and several forums scanned trying to find a solution. Program was re-installed without any improvement. Windows XP and Firefox 11.0 is maybe a bad combination?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Firefox should work ok on Windows XP SP3.
As a priority backup both your current bookmarks and your complete profile, in order to preserve any bookmarks you have. Place the backed up profile and bookmarks somewhere safe NOT in he Firefox program or profile paths, your XP desktop would be a suitable location.
- see backing up and restoring bookmarks
Take care, note restoring bookmarks overwrites and destroys existing bookmarks - backing up your information
Note that the profile should contain a folder with backup bookmarks in it.
As a first step try Firefox in safe mode and disable any plugins whilst in safemode. There is a possibility something is interfering with your bookmarks, it is unlikely but worth a try.
The next step is to create and use a new profile.Try the new profile and see if bookmarks work on that. If so you can then try restoring your bookmarks from one of the backup copies into the new profile. If that works you could then consider renaming the file places.sqlite and copying your new working places.sqlite into the original folder. That should allow you to again use bookmarks.
It is a good idea to regularly manually backup your bookmarks, or alternativly maybe back them up to another device using sync.
Thanks for your prompt response. Safe Mode did not help. Trying to run firefox.exe -ProfileManager only results in starting Firefox browser in its normal mode. I tried to re- download Firefox again from another site but still the same problem. No profile manager to be found! What to do?
Reading the linked articles did you also come across managing profiles_starting-the-profile-manager
Did you try just appending -p instead of writing out -ProfileManager, did you also try the full path, remembering the quotation marks as explaind in the above article. Another method of opening the profilemanger is to edit the shortcut: at the end of the target after firefox exe, and after any quotation marks add a space then -p, that should result in the shortcut starting profilemanager.
Regardless of the problems with trying to start the pofilemanager did you manage to backup your profile and your bookmarks.

Thanks cor-el and John99. Problem solved!! Renaming the places.sqlite file and then restarting Firefox fixed the problem. Great help!
