Why are multiple cookie permission dialogs opened for some sites?

more options

I have Firefox set up to ask permission before setting any cookies. For many sites this works properly, allowing me to define the default behaviour for that site (Allow, allow for session, deny). For some sites, however, this same dialog appears multiple times. In some cases twenty or more copies of it. To make matters worse, this is a modal dialog (modal dialogs are a huge pet peeve of mine), so I cannot switch to another tab or do anything on Firefox until I deal with all those dialogs.

In related matters, I would also like to know why Firefox asks permission to set additional cookies or modify cookies for sites that I have told Firefox to allow to create cookies.

It is irritating when the dialogs are for the identical domain. Usually they are different in some respect -- whether it's a slightly different subdomain or a third party cookie -- but occasionally you get a rapid-fire flood of them. I've stopped using that option, so my memory of it is fading.

(I spent at least a decade reading and clicking those dialogs in Firefox and IE before that. But last year I changed my default to allow all cookies just for the current session. I have to manually allow persistent cookies for the few sites I want to remember me from session to session, and advertisers can watch me for hours at a time if I hadn't already blocked them before. I think this is a better use of time and a reasonable balance of privacy compared with answering with all those dialogs.)

If Firefox is not correctly remembering previously set permissions, this could indicate some file corruption. I'm not sure how to remedy that without starting from scratch on your allow/block list, but another contributor may have some suggestions.
