Firefox crashes whenever I try to select 'Preferences'

If I open FF10 via the CLI and then try to navigate to 'Preferences' I get the following error message: firefox10: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/gnome-vfs.2.0/modules/libfile.so undefined symbol: gnome_vfs_unescape_string

I get the same error if I try clicking on a URL in an email message in Thunderbird.

Both FF and TB are the latest 10.0.2 (installed from the tar.gz files). I am running Linux Mint Debian Edition Update Pack 3. The versions of FF and TB in this distro's repositories displayed the same problem.

The crashes happen in Safe Mode.

Reinstalling libgnome2-vfs-perl using Synaptic did not cure the problem.
