Home page always opens up as a second tab in addition to the website I initally opened up in my browser

when opening a website link, from a source other than through Firefox, my home page also opens up as a second tab. This is annoying as I always receive a message asking if I want to close all tabs when I close down the web page I initially opened up. I never used to have this happen. How do I turn this off?
