After upgrading to Firefox 5.0 my laptop automatically downgrades to Firefox 3.6

I am running Windows 7 32bit. Every time I upgrade Firefox 3.6 to previously 4.0 and now 5.0 it automatically downgrades to 3.6. If while running 5.0, I go into the help menu in Firefox, open 'About Firefox' and select 'Check for upgrade', the program advises that an upgrade is available and installs ver.3.6.
