In a previous version of Internet Explorer, whenever there was a site to purchase something, there was a "padlock" symbol in the tool bar to ensure that it was a safe site to enter credit card info. How do I know if the site is safe on Firefox? Is there a symbol any where?

This feature in the simple form you describe disappeared a while ago, I would imagine it was getting too easy to spoof. You now need to note the colour of the
- site identity button <--- clickable link ---
and if necessary click it for more information including the familiar padlock
