You can unload tabs you are not actively using to help reduce memory and CPU usage, while keeping your tabs available to revisit later. When you unload a tab, it remains visible but doesn’t use resources in the background. When you're ready to return to it, Firefox will reload the page automatically.

Starting in Firefox version 140, you can unload tabs directly from the tab context (right-click) menu.

Unload a single tab

You can unload a single tab to free up resources for other tasks, while keeping the tab ready for when you need it again.

To do this:

  1. Right-clickRight-click (or hold down the Control key while you click) on the tab.
  2. Select Unload Tab.

The tab’s icon will gray out, indicating it’s unloaded. When you click the tab again, Firefox will automatically reload the page and restore its content.

Unload multiple tabs

You can also unload multiple tabs at once for more efficient tab management.

  1. Select the tabs you want to unload (Ctrl + Click on Windows and Linux, Command + Click on Mac).
  2. Right-clickRight-click (or hold down the Control key while you click) one of these tabs and select Unload n Tabs.

Tip: If you often keep many tabs open, unloading unused ones can significantly improve Firefox’s performance and responsiveness.
