I have Google Talk plugin ver 5.2.4.0 active and I can't voice chat
Instant messaging is OK I am using Thunderbird 24.4.0 on Ubuntu (latest release)
I assume once you can instant message someone then it is a matter of clicking the little Google icon to open a voice chat channel

Ask the add on author how their software works.
Who is the author? I could not find the plug-in on Mozilla's web site
Does that mean the plug- in is built into Thunderbird According to the information linked to "more" on Thunderbird's add-on manager, the Google Talk plugin was last updated on the 14th of March 2014 and it's a shared library
I am going to take a wild guess and say Google. It is definitely not a Mozilla product.
Yes it appears the Google Talk plug-in is developed by Google as a library to be used by other developers for their applications.
Also the same plug-in library is used by Firefox and Thunderbird same version It works well on Firefox using gmail to access it It does not work for me on Thunderbird using the chat tab to access it Both are Mozilla products and I can only guess that the way each product interfaces to the plug-in library is different
Thunderbird has no support for talk. Perhaps that is the issue here.
