I upgraded to v.4 a few days ago and I hate it. I want to downgrade to the previous version, which I was very happy with. I'm pretty computer illiterate, do NOT enjoy experimenting with new features, configurations, etc. I would simply like to return my computer to the way it looked and acted before I upgraded.

I just upgraded and immediately downgraded. I went back to my downloads and opened old version's file and it let me reinstall it without any problems. 4 gone :-)

I had the same problem but found that you can download version 3.6 http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html You don't need to uninstall 4.0 It will return back as it was.
