The problem first started with getting messages to turn on cookies. Cookies were enabled. Went through entire list of suggestions and no longer got that error message. Then could not open links or down load programs. Spent hours going through and completing tasks in the troubleshooting pages. Still would not load programs. Created a new file name but then had earlier bug with "oops, firefox has caused an error and will close" return. Finally, completely deleted Firefox from system, but could not reload it. When I click the download button, it takes me to another screen with no downloadable elements. I reloaded IE8, but no change. Running Windows XP Service Pack 3 on a Dell Dimension 2350

I would tend to ignore the cookie problem; it is unlikely to affect downloads or upgrades to firefox.

Your first task is to obtain and save on your computer an installation file for firefox:

  • try from mozilla
  • if you get an option to save rather than run/install take that option
  • (any security software you use may prevent you from running the file, but it will probably not block an attempt to download it)

■ have you managed to download an installation file ?

Your second task is to install firefox; using the file that you have just downloaded.

  • you may need to be in an administrator account, or The administrator account
  • you may need to disable security software
  • all you need to do normally is click or double click the file and it will run/install and you will be prompted if further info is required. See How to install Firefox on Windows
