I've installed the latest version of Firefox but I keep getting a message telling me my computer needs to reboot. Rebooting doesn't help. I get the same message. How do I get out of this loop?
I tried to install the latest version of Firefox, 3.6.13, and while the installation seems to have been successful, I keep getting a message telling me my computer ``must be rebooted for the installation to be completed. I have rebotted repeatedly but to no avail. I've been using earlier versions of Firefox for a couple of years now and have never run into this particular difficulty before.

It shouldn't be necessary to reboot the computer to complete an update.
Download a fresh copy of Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html) and do a reinstall of Firefox on top of the current version.
You may need to do a clean install:
- Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
- Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
- Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
- It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
Thanks for your effort to help in a precise way. Unfortunately, before I posted my original request for help, I tried to download the newest version of Firefox several times over the previous installation. The system wouldn't let me complete the effort. Each time it said I must reboot the computer. I tried ignoring the message and attempted to just open the browser but that either didn't work or I got the message again. I was ready to abandon Firefox. In a moment of desperation, after I posted the request for help, I decided on a whim to install the Beta version of the software now available on the website. That worked and Beta 4 seems to be a very fast, smoothly operating piece of software. I'm no closer to figuring out what went wrong with the previous version, 3.6.13, but I've moved on and so far like the result.
Did you try to delete the Firefox 3 program folder?
It is possible that the Firefox 3.6 installer wasn't able to replace some files to update them to a new version and in such cases you need to remove that complete Mozilla Firefox folder.
The Firefox 4 beta version is installed in a separate program folder and that is why installing that version has worked.
