tried all suggestions and even started in safe mode deleting all bookmarks and then importing HTML. still get same problem. BTW, I have a lot of bookmarks so could that be a problem?

There may be a problem with the file that stores the bookmarks, for details see Locked or damaged places.sqlite - MozillaZine Knowledge Base
