How do folks, My email space meter is running at 91% and slowly building.

I regularly delete unwanted emails from "Deleted" and "Junk" folders. I have setting set to clear deleted and junk folders on shut down. It does not seem to work.

Emails I want to keep long term go in my "local folder". I have a number of sub-folders within the local folder. The emails in the local folder are those I want to keep for one reason of another so I am not keen on deleting them. I run "compact emails" whenever the pop up appears.

Can anyone recommend a course of action to get the volume meter down to 50% or better?

When you say 'local folder' do you mean the 'Local Folders' mail account, if yes then those emails are stored on your computer in Thunderbird profile folders and any emails in that mail account do not count towards your server quota.

You can check you have full emails and not just headers by going into offline mode. If you can read those emails in 'Local Folders' mail account then you have a full copy and all is ok.

Compacting folders removes hidden marked as deleted emails from the folder they were originally stored in.

If you are talking about a gmail imap account, then it is important to subscribe to see and use the gmail trash/bin for deleted emails.

Gmail keeps all incoming, outgoing, archived etc emails in 'All Mail' folder. You only see them in other 'folders' because a type of tag/label is applied so offering a view more familiar to users. If you use the gmail trash folder then emails will get properly deleted from the 'All Mail' folder. Gmail will auto empty the gmail trash bin periodically. Otherwise, only the label gets removed and you end up with an archived email in 'All Mail' and your quota will not have been decreased.

'All Mail' can get huge. So it is much better to logon to gmail webmail account using a browser to check out what gmail has kept in the 'All Mail' folder. Remember, anything deleted from the 'All Mail' folder will be deleted from all other folders and thus deleted from the view of those folders as seen in imap mail accounts.
