Ow, I see the attachment did not come through. One more try
I did follow the instructions
What instructions?
What the pop-up in the attachment says: Go to IMAP advanced settings and lower the buffer connections
It says:
Can not connect to your IMAP server. You may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server. If so, use the advanced IMAP server settings window to decrease the number of buffered connections.
Are you using any Apple products? They are known for eating up IMAP connections.
Thanks for answering. No this is Windows 7. Strange thing is that everything was fine up until today...
Check with your email provider whether they are having problems.
They don't because I do recieve/send mail on my phone and also webmail
What brand is your phone? Android or Apple?
Android
Maybe I did not describe my problem well enough.
I can't send and/or recieve mail in Thunderbird on my windows 7 pc annmore.
The problem is not with my provider or my phone, because I can recieve mail on my phone (TypeApp) and I can work with webmail.
The problem is Thunderbird.
Thunderbird says: Can not connect to your IMAP server. You may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server. If so, use the advanced IMAP server settings window to decrease the number of buffered connections.
Thanks for trying to help!
No everyone here understands your issue must fine. Mobile phones are notorious form seizing all the server connections and not releasing them. The question still stands, if you turn your phone off does Thunderbird work normal.
Ah, oke, now I understand why you'll were asking about my phone :-)
Unfortunately, turning my phone off and starting Thunderbird on my computer didn't solve the problem; still get the same message about the IMAP. The' loading circle' in the tab is turning endlessly like Thunderbird is trying to get to the mail (server) but somehow is blocked...
Thanks again for thinking along!

Webmail infrastructure is independent from POP/IMAP/SMTP servers. Therefore, if webmail works, this isn't an indication that there are no other problems at the provider's end. Using the phone app presumably is just another flavor of webmail.
Therefore the earlier advice still stands. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1216464#answer-1108679
Okay, will contact them; wil let you know.
Nope, nothing wrong there. Afraid I'm going to have to look for another email program...
I uninstalled and reistalled Thunderbird and it works like a charm.
Thank you alle for helping!

So what anti virus were you using that messed up? Most if not all these miraculous cures occur due to the poor quality of anti virus products.
The common ones we hear about on the forum are McAfee, AVG, Norton and Kaspersky .
AVG... What I still don't understand is why it happened all of a sudden. It was running fine for almost a year

The why is impossible to guess. They get daily updates and some of them are not good. Often the next or one in a few days fixes the not good result. Basically I think lack of testing on the AV programs is the problem. We have all sorts of trouble testing Thunderbird for what amounts to an annual public update. They do it daily.
