The address book can and should be backed up.

The files in your Thunderbird profile are abook.mab and history.mab - the Personal and Collected Addresses address books. If you have any other address books, Thunderbird will ignore them if you just copy them.

It is therefore recommended to backup the entire Thunderbird profile. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-tb#w_backing-up-a-profile
