When I look in my sent folder in Thunderbird, my mail seems to be in either 'sent' or 'sent mail' under the location column. What is the difference between the two please?

I suspect that this account is connected using IMAP. "Sent" will be the folder provided by Thunderbird itself, and "Sent Items" is put there by the email server.

It can be quite difficult to avoid the server populating its own folder, so you may have a smoother ride if you set Thunderbird to use "Sent Items". This setting can be found under Account Settings in Thunderbird.
