I've searching for a fix to jittery video playback. It doesn't happen all the time, but enough to be a real headache.

I think I found at least one reason that has been causing it for me. It's the Play/Pause addon. I would have reported directly to the developer, but there is no option to do so, and it looks like development has stopped.

This is an important function for me. I'd like to know if there are any alternatives.

I'd also like to know if anyone remembers the addon that would give a drop down list from the toolbar button to any tabs that were playing sound. Especially handy for unfocused tabs that weren't in the current tab toolbar display area, so the tab could be identified and found and muted

What does "Play/Pause" addon do that a decent media player can't? Play/Pause sounds like you want it to play & pause? That's what the space bar does.

SMPlayer is excellent w/o being quite as complicated as VLC, if you ever have to edit settings.

It also depends partly on how much cache you're allowing (or Flash) & how fast your connection is. Off the top, I don't know how to increase the cache in Flash, but it's easy in SMPlayer & VLC.

On some sites, when they're busy, it doesn't matter what you use or connection speed - their servers are overloaded.

I see you have Flash Player installed? Are there really vids you want to watch that are available only in flash? That could be part of the problem. Didn't Mozilla make Flash start running in a sandbox?

Try SMPlayer or VLC (have portable versions on the devs' sites, if you look / ask.

My 2 cents - if you care about system safety, ditch Flash.

I'm getting the impression we are referring to different things.

I'm not talking about buffering.

I'm talking about jittery video playback for lack of a better description. You kinda have to see it to understand.

The herky-jerky audio/video sputters and stutters, and often cannot be manually paused when it is in this state. To stop it, you have to reload the page, and hopefully that works and doesn't repeat itself.

The Play/Pause "important function" I'm looking to duplicate is how it automatically pauses the playing video when you leave the tab.
