Firefox doesn't know how to open this address because the protocol (Bitcoin) isn't associated with any program. How do I fix this?
Hello. I am on Linux 32 bit and I have a completely separate issue that I got a response about a week ago but just havent had time to tackle it or dive in, related to Looks like your using an older version of Firefox which is related to Adobe Flash plug in....so I'll get around to it and dont know if that's related at all.
What is related is this error: Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (bitcoin) isn't associated with any program. So this is a Bitcoin question and I researched for over an hour on this Bitcoin protocol thing before but nothing worked. I just installed a payment box for Bitcoin on my site, and I thought it worked until I tried to copy the address and hit send (even tried with my MultiBit wallet open) and NOT THIS AGAIN! http://bitcoinmacroeconomics.com/2015/06/08/wildlife-photography-test-c/ (This was just a test) I saw this error (protocol) error for many things, not just Bitcoin, and though I tried several of the solutions, nothing worked. I can't give up now! Is this more of a MultiBit issue than Firefox? What am not getting? Again, I tried with the MultiBit wallet open to no avail.

I doubt I will use bitcoin, unless it becomes way more mainstream, but I would have thought the idea of using multibit is that it deals with everything for you.
I note besides github multibit mention using stackexchange
That site is probably more concerned with mining rather than transferring bitcoins, but it may be worth posting there.

The http at the beginning of the line tells the computer to open the WWW using whatever program is the default.

OK I am having an issue when I switched to new screenshot (have tried like 5 now!) because of the unrelated problem of older version of firefox (flash prloblem) I lost all previous add ons. Now when I go to save screenshot, it saves it in jPEG or PNG and when I go to save it in pictures ...or search most recent, it's not there, like it's not supported. I normally screenshot and can copy and paste it to clipboard, or (ALL FILES), but it won't let me choose ALL Files, just Jpeg and PNG and then I can't "browse" and upload the screenshot. Something so basic becomes a real pain. I am sorry but I cannot get the screenshot going. But back to my problem here.... Save the screen shot to the desk top if you can.
If you are still having problems, create a new folder and put it there.
Normally you would only see that message if Firefox was instructed to open a link in the form bitcoin://someaddress/ which didn't seem to be part of the page when I loaded it. Based on reading a few other threads on the web, it seems that you would encounter that kind of link when making a payment in Bitcoin, which is not something I tried (or could try).
I was going to say that Firefox usually discovers protocol handlers from the Windows registry seamlessly, but that obviously doesn't apply to you. Please see this article with more info on how it works on Linux: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Register_protocol. You might need instructions from MultiBit or its community on exactly what the command string should be.
ok thanks for your help...I have question in at Github for MultiBit.....and after the fact, I figured out screenshot.....after getting my other problem resolved....and I am back on track with most current version of Firefox! That image shows what error I am getting regarding protocol.

I would have suggestions about the Windows registry if you were on Windows, but I don't know where Firefox learns about external program protocols on Linux, other than what is in the article I linked to before.

Did you install the Bitcoin software for Firefox?
Did you complete the instructions for Linux?
- network.protocol-handler.expose.bitcoin = false
That should make Firefox ask what application to open it with then next time you encounter the bitcoin protocol.
